To and from the USA, no passport needed if by land. But you already will need them if going or coming by air. As of 2008, you'll need them for ALL travel to and from Canada.

Effective January 23, 2007, all U.S. citizens traveling by AIR to and from Canada are required to have a valid passport to enter the United States. As early as January 1, 2008, U.S. citizens traveling between the United States and Canada by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid U.S. passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security.
Visas are not required for U.S. citizens entering Canada from the U.S. You will, however, need:
Proof of your U.S. citizenship such as your U.S. passport or certified copy of your birth certificate issued by the city, county or state in the U.S. where you were born. If you are a naturalized U.S. citizen and do not have a passport, you should travel with your naturalization certificate.
A driver’s license, voter’s registration card or Social Security card is NOT valid proof of citizenship.
Photo identification, such as a current, valid driver’s license is required.

If you and your family are US citizens, you can drive without passports until January 2008. If you fly, you MUST have a passport. Take your ID's and birth certificates, and don't forget your daughter's birth certificate especially.

Assuming you are a US citizen:
You need a passport to fly to/from Canada, or to fly within Canada.
You do not need a passprt for ground transit until January, but in order to return to the US, you should have photo ID and birth certificates (you may not be asked for them, but it is better to have them and not need them than vice versa).

A passport is not needed to drive into Canada prior to Dec 31,2008. I believe to fly you do need one.

Driving no. But starting Jan 2008 you will. I just went to Niagara falls last weekend. It was amazing. If you fly or take a boat you do need one as of Jan 2007. Have fun!!!!

It depends upon your citizenship! If you're more specific, maybe we can help.
Thanks!
