Although I love Cozumel, if that is where you choose to go, remember that they were hit hard with Hurricane Katrina and are still recovering. Most of the vegetation was wiped out and the trees are now just young saplings.
Hawaii, however, is where I choose to live. One of the most beautiful spots on the face of the planet. Each island has different things to choose from. Oahu has nightlife, lots to do, Pearl Harbor, Waikiki, Diamond Head, North Shore, shopping. Both Turtle Bay Resort and Ko'Olina Marriot resort are beautiful, but fairly far from Honolulu and Waikiki. Staying on Waikiki there are lots of hotels to choose from, I like the Hilton Hawaiian Village, but they are pricey. Parasailing, go to Kewalo Basin (just 5-10 minutes from Waikiki). Snorkeling, Hanauma Bay. Take a hike up Diamond Head. Best Luau - Paradise Cove.
Kauaii - breathtakingly beautiful, but not too much to do in the way of nightlife. However, great snorkeling. Kauaii has the 'grand canyon of the Pacific' - a must see - gorgeous. Backroad Adventures has a zip-line through the rainforest there - awesome.
Maui - a little of everything! nightlife, great beaches, beautiful rainforests - all the touristy stuff - a really phenominal Aquarium,.
Hawaii (the Big Island) - volcanoes (currently giving off great displays!). Black sand beaches, farms, lots of great snorkeling, diving, not so much in the way of nightlife, but absolutely one of my favorite places - love the Big Island.
Once you settle on an island, remember, flights between islands are cheap - I've seen them this week as low as $9 one way, but typically $29-$39. We are also scheduled to get our super ferry up and working this summer - it was slated for July, but it now looks to be August. For now it's going to go between Oahu, Kauaii and Maui. If you're here when it's going, you'd be able to take your rental car on the ferry to one of the other islands - a great way to explore.
Aloha and have fun.

I love Cozumel, and I have do disagree with the poster who says there is nothing to see there - there are lots of things to see and do. However, Hawaii is a beautiful place too. Love Maui. From my perspective though (in Texas), Hawaii is a once every 7-10 year trip, whereas we go to Coz every year for 10 days. We love it there and it's incredibley reasonably priced from Texas. But based on my theory of Hawaii every ten years or so, I'd go to Hawaii on my honeymoon. Unless you're a scuba diver, then you should go to Cozumel (you won't be sorry).

My husband and I have visited Cozumel & have also spent a fair amount of time on O'ahu, Maui, Kauai & the Big Island (island of Hawai'i). Cozumel is nice, if you like to dive, but is still recovering from hurricane Katrina. It is also very small, as is its downtown, so there isn't as much to see. Prices were relatively inexpensive though.
If I had my choice, I would pick Maui, with all three of the other islands as a close second. As one of the others suggested, stay out of Waikiki if staying on O'ahu. It is very much a tourist area and you do not get a true taste of the islands. Visit the North Shore & the town of Haleiwa on O'ahu. On Maui, you can't go wrong staying in Kihei, Ka'anapali, Lahaina or Kahana. All cater to tourists with nice hotels & restaurants, but do not have the same feel as Waikiki. If you select Maui, I have many recommendations.
Kauai is also beautiful. We've stayed in Hanalei & also Waimea. Both are at different ends of the island and remember, you can't drive all the way around Kauai, so you may want to be more centrally located in the area of Poipu. On the Big Island, you may want to split your time between Hilo & Kona. Hilo is the wet, tropical side with little in the way of tourists. There is the Volcano National Park though, which is worth seeing. There are no sandy beaches on this side of the island. Kona is the "hot" side with lots of volcanic rock. Good sandy beaches are about a 30 minute drive (Hapuna Beach), but worth it. Bring plenty of water & sunscreen!
Good luck in making your decision and congratulations on your upcoming marriage.

Cozumel is absolutely NO competition for Hawaii. There is nothing to see on the island. I toured it and know. The main thing in Cozumel is beaches and going snorkeling or scuba. You can do some shopping but not like in other Caribbean islands like St Thomas. If you want to go to Mexico then Cancun or Cabo are much better places.
On the other hand Hawaii has a lot to offer. It is 100 times more pretty than Cozumel and has a multitude of activities from visiting the Arizona Memorial/Pearl Harbor, to going to a luau, to doing a 35 mile downhill bike ride, to para-sailing and wind surfing. And you can even plan your vacation to visit two islands. The last time we went we flew to Oahu for 4 nights and then to Maui for 4 and flew home from there.
The top things to do in Hawaii are:
1. Oahu Island: Go to Pearl Harbor to see history at the US Arizona Memorial. You can drive or take the bus there; no need to book a tour. But you need to go early because the site is popular and the wait for your free tour can be about an hour. In Waikiki you can browse around the International Market across from Waikiki Beach, go on a sunset dinner cruise on Waikiki bay, try an outrigger canoe ride on Waikiki, go for a sail on a catamaran on Waikiki Bay, or visit Diamond Head park. If you like to snorkel go to Hanauma Bay which has perfect flap water for snorkeling on a reef.
2. Oahu Island: If you are on the island of Oahu go to the other side of the island to see the great deserted beaches (get a rental car for a day or two). Take highway 99 north toward Waimea and stop at the Dole pineapple plantation for a tour.
3. Oahu Island: The Polynesian Cultural Center is a great place to learn about authentic Hawaiian life. You can buy tickets to tour the place, and another type ticket that allows you to stay for the evening luau.
4. Maui Island: If you go to Maui, you gotta do the downhill bike ride. I don't recommend the sunrise one because you have to get up at 3:00 AM to get started up the mountain and its cold up there that early. If you are a romantic do it, but otherwise no. There are different bike companies and some don't take you all the way to the top, and some don't guide you back down. You can come down by yourself, there's only one road with just a little traffic, but if you are squeamish about riding in the street, a company that accompanies you down will help watch the traffic for you. I have been twice and prefer Maui Downhill to the others. These companies have web sites They will pick you up at your hotel, take you to their shop to pick out a wet-suit (for the cold and mist/rain shower maybe) and gloves and helmet; then take you up the mountain; then follow your group down so they can block traffic for your ride; then afterwards take you back to your hotel. Expect this activity to take 75-80% or more of the day.
5. Maui Island: The Road to Hana is a great drive (you need a rental car). It’s a 45 mile winding road that takes 4 hours to drive. Its like driving through the jungle; has a bunch of one lane bridges. Then drive past Hana to the Seven-Pools attraction and go for a swim.
6. Big Island of Hawaii: go to the Volcano National Park. Also go see Akaka Falls. If you like horseback riding, go to the Parker Ranch and go for a guided ride. Drive to the south end of the island and see a black sand beach. For information about tours and things to do, click on the link below for Roberts Hawaii. They do tours on all of the islands.

you would never regret Hawaii, just don't hang around Honolulu, see the north shore of Oahu and go to at least one other island
