Your best bet is to go to the doctors as blood clots passed in a bm is not normal. was the blood dark, or bright red. very important. bright red means a bleed close to rectum, if it's dark like black, it can mean a bleed higher up, like stomach. the best i can say is go see a doctor. if my patient had this i would ask the doc to send my patient for a test, to rule anything out.

You could have pushed too hard and broke a blood vessel. If you are actually having clots come out in/with your BM's then go to the doctor.
Your should never actually have blood in your stools

fresh blood, that is red, is almost always internal hemmorhoids. If the blood has had time to clot or change to a dark color, the bleeding is higher up in the bowel and should be checked into by a doctor.

Canadian nurse is right about the distinction about BRB vs clots. Just so you know the severity it could be anything from gastric ulcer to colon cancer. You need to go in ASAP. Do not take iron suppliments or eat spinach before you go to the doctor since this will mask symptoms.

Most likely causes are hemmorrhoids or small cracks in the anus caused by a hard bowel movement. Are you getting enough fiber in your diet? Try taking Metamucil to help soften your stool.

If the blood is bright red, it may be hemorrhoids. If the blood is darker it is from your bowel, and you should call your doctor. Sometimes it is not a big problem, but sometimes it is.

Passing blood is not something you should ignore.
While it may not be serious you should seek some medical advice.
