I have a 1993 Volvo 850 that runs great. However, on occassion, when I'm in 5th gear and then put it in nuetral to go make a turn it stalls/dies on me. I then turn the key and away we go. However, having a car die in the middle of an intersection slowing from high-speed is quite dangerous. Any ideas?

Thanks all for the quick responses. Here is a bit better explanation. Let's say that I'm going down a country highway at say 50MPH and need to make a left-hand turn onto another road. I typically have to slow way down to make the turn it is as I am turning that it dies (not everytime). I will try the suggestions. Forgive me, but how do I "dump the clutch" - and no, hitting trees is not desirable!! :) Thanks again.

suspect a combination 1. throttle body dirty w/ carbon deposits[clean w/ carb cleaner spray and small BRASS "toothbrush]
2. flame trap service and element replacement[this is used instead of a positive crankcase ventilation valve] and when dirty causes excessive blow by into throttle body resulting in no.1.
3 constant idle valve sticking closed. DO NOT use carb cleaner on this it will be ruined use only B. G. chemicals intake spray cleaner for this. [it slowly softens the deposits and wont eat the electrical parts inside]
two last notes the throttle position sensor should have a 5 volt [4.8v.]referance and read less than 1volt [0.7-0.9] in idle position w/a clean throttle body and close to 5[4.6-4.8] volts at wot these test are to be done with key on engine off and use a digital volt meter [easier to read]

The fact that he is contacting her so much shows me that he is still in love with her. No it is not just sex. Does it not bother you that he is getting sex from another woman rather than you? Why do you feel you deserve so much less than her? You do have a problem with this or you would not be asking for help. So, you need to stand up for yourself. Be a strong independent woman who deserves to have a man that wants her and only her. Go to him and put a STOP to this. The trust seal has been broken you may need to think about getting out of this relationship it sounds as though he already has. Of course it will be sad. So go find your best friend and use the shoulder only a BF has and you will get through this. It is meant to happen so now you can find your real prince charming if he doesn't want to step up. Nothing will change in your life though until you make yourself believe you are worthy of better and more, you deserve it. Things will get better only after you truly believe in you.

Why are you in neutral coming through a turn?
Drop it down in forth and use some throttle. Also you don't need to turn the key, dump the clutch and it will should start running again.
If you are in a turn and have reserve tire grip to use the brake, you have the grip to make the turn. Just don't use to much throttle or you'll eat a tree.

In truck driving you always are supposed to downshift when breaking and turning. it might be a useful immediate help but I believe you will find that the larger issue is if you have a gas powered vehicle you need only increase the octane of the gas you are using ie use premium instead of regular. If your vehicle is diesel have your rail run at a authorized repair facility.

My thoughts are going towards a vacuum leak. I don't think it is fuel because your would notice that during different gears and up hills. I don't think it is electrical because you would see that in regular idling.

Either have someone check or you check your hoses for ( sucking sounds) for the lack of a better term. That would indicate a vacuum leak. You might also want to replace the PCV valve if your vehicle has over 50K miles.

Good luck!
