The way the citizen watch function without batteries is because there's a mechanism inside the watch that has a little coil with 2 gears that receives energy from your wrist movements that movements goes to the little coil with 2 gears and that mechanism storages energy from your wrist movements in few words you have a watch for life!

Good Luck!

Ah young people, aren't you amazed at what technology we had in the dark ages?
First wind up watches have a spring that you- get this, wind up. This stores energy which is slowly released to a spinning wheel which trips a lever to move the hands. It is more complex than that but essentially correct.
Self winding watches are the same but they have a little weight inside that swings when you move the watch winding the spring. I have a self winding that keeps very good time and as long as I wear three or four hours a day it stays wound. A full wind up is good for 36 hours. No battery to go dead just when you really need to know the tim.
