My son, who is now 2 1/2 has a poop issue. For the longest time he has not wanted to change his diper after pooping. I would ask if he pooped and he would tell me "no" everytime. In the last few weeks as we have begun the potty training talk he now tells us when he poops and immediately takes off his diaper. I have been looking at this as a good sign that he is coming around to the potty in the toilet attitude. Unfortunately he has developed a habit of playing with it. Even though we (him and I) have talked about the yuckiness of the poop he still plays with it. Twice now he has ended up covered head to toe and covered carpet, blankets and toys with it. What can I do to end this nastiness??

I started potty training my son at 2 when he would not keep his diaper on. Your son should see you and or dad poop and pee in the toilet and if you can catch him before he plays in the poop and flush whats in his diaper down the toilet. Take him first thing in the morning to the bathroom, cause everyone has to pee in the morning and before he goes to bed. Congratulate him with a dance, song and or treat as a reward. Try to learn his schedule. Tell him that he is ready and take him to the store allowing him to pick out big boy pants. Most kids have a favorite character. Explain to him that he should keep these clean. Also get the thick training pants to hold more when he has an accident. Last but not least never leave him alone.

keep a closer eye on him, tape the diaper on with clear scotch tape so only you can take it off, reiterate every chance you get when you take off the diaper how nasty it all is by faces and comments, etc., maybe put him in some kind of montessori, head start, etc. 1/2 day program to see how the other kids do it, reward him when he does right.

Have you tried using Pull-ups on him, they're harder to get off then diapers. After my kids started taking off the diapers everytime they were dirty, I switched to pull-ups and they couldn't get them off.
Also, try putting him in a onsies, that might keep him from getting in the diaper.

Take pictures....what seems really gross now will become funny memories of your son in future...(could also be used as blackmail when he's in his teen years). In all honesty they do grow out of this. Invest in some good cleaning supplies until then and good luck!
