I prefer losing weight naturally. With any kind of surgical procedure, there is always a risk of something going wrong. Your stomach will shrink itself over time with good eating and exercise. It doesn't need to be operated on in order to do that. Not only that, I think surgery is taking the easy way out.

Weight loss surgery-like gastric bypass surgery have become very common and very safe now. My cousin got her Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in India. She has lost more than 65 lbs in 5 months and is very happy with the results. The price for obesity surgery is very less in India. My cousin just paid 25% of the cost she was quoted in America. She got her surgery from a company called Forerunners Healthcare.
Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines. I have read a lot of their patient stories also. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as bariatric surgery and weight loss surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that your Obesity surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.

My Mother is considering having a lap band put in place because it does not involve anything being cut and re-sewn.
However she has put the operation off for a year because she wants to exercises and diet and more importantly learn about NUTRITION (not diets) because I pointed out to her. If you can not understand how to feed yourself properly now when you can eat "normal" amounts of food, how will you ever manage when you can only eat food a couple of tablespoons full at a time.
It is not an easy fix, there are risks (death, illness) and months of recovery time. A lot of people who had these kinds of operations can suffer from malnutrition or simply starvation as their gag reflex becomes very strong. Think about this very carefully if you are considering it.

Gastric Bypass is a malabsorptive operation that restricts food intake and decreases the digestion and absorption of food.

I think it is great, and you should be morbidly obese to get it, a BMI of 40 or more. And people that do have a BMI of 40 more have an extremely hard time to lose the weight naturally.

it should definetly be the last choice. changing the physical structure of the digestive tract may help with weight loss but it is surely not going to have a positive effect on the health after the weight is lost.

If you do decide to do it, make sure you get vitamin shots because 5% of people who have this surgery get some sort of neuropathy(painful nerve pain) after.
