It's about as easy as fathoming non-physical existence, genderlessness, timelessnes, or infinity. The child in the womb of the mother cannot fathom life or the world outside although she has a brain, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, etc., and is separated by only a few thin layers of tissue and skin, yet that world is there to welcome her and give her a chance to use all those attributes she developed while growing in the womb. Could this be an analogy for another part of our life?

No, I don't suspect the human mind is really capable of grasping immortality. It's like trying to imagine the infinite, it doesn't work.
Hell, we have a hard enough time fathoming several billion years and many people have so much trouble with that they decide to believe the world is only a couple thousand years old - maybe the concept of billions makes their heads hurt.

I can fathom it... I fathom it to be extremely boring if I have to stay in one place all that time, be it heaven or hell. I'd rather be free to travel the universe and see new things, people and creatures.

It has to be scary toward the end...
what happens when there is no-one left? And you are all alone...that would suck...

I think that goofy is a far more appropriate word than scary.

Way way easier than to contemplate death. We ARE alive now so we know what alive is. Can't contemplate death, never been there.
