Sometimes I feel they are part of the problem not the solution. If they didn’t volunteer they wouldn’t be over there.
Obviously they are not fighting for our freedoms. They are fighting for George Bush, Dick Cheney and Don Rhumsfeld

If there was a draft this war would have been over before it began. The majority of pepole would never let thier children fight in this war. I think since there is not a draft it has lasted this long. People can avoid the issue. They can choose not to participate. They can change the channel.

KJ: You are right. You cannot control what an 18 year old will do. I know if there was a draft the college campuses would be on fire. There would be marches in the streets. It would be 1971 - 72 again. I'm old enough to have a draft number. Believe me. We would out of this war.

I think there is some deference in what you volunteer for.
If you volunteer as fireman our doctor and you help people. You’re a humanitarian?
If you volunteer in your community and your help your neighbors. You’re a good citizen.
If you volunteer to invade a nation on the pretence of lies and as a result a civil war breaks out, the country implodes and 100’s of thousands of people die. You’re a Murderer?
I guess its how you look at the definition of a volunteer.

Man have you missed the boat...start swiminng dude! We should support them volunteers or not, they are fighting for our freedom not just the Iraqi people's freedom. If you can't understand why we are there and why we are fighting them there, so as not to fight them here then you have No hope, which is understandable being a Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld hater. Get over dude and get off the kool-aide it's rotting your brain!

I try to avoid answer questions from trolls but I will make an exception today.
The first point of your argument I would like to address is the idea that if it we had a draft military, the war would have ended sooner due to it being unpopular. The United States has fought at least two unpopular wars with the use of soldiers from the draft; Viet Nam and Korea. Many nations have fought wars that were not popular with their citizens with draft armies.
The second issue is the idea that since they are volunteers we should not support them. Under that logic you would not support anyone. He volunteered to be a doctor, so I will not support him. She volunteered to be a police officer, so I will not support her. They volunteered to be parents, so I will not support them. You volunteered to post an ill-thought out question, so I will not support you.

Iraq War veteran here. I volunteered because I felt a duty to serve the US. I never believed what we were doing in Iraq was valid. I didn't believe it before the war, while I was there, and certainly not now that I am a civilian. But don't blame the troops, they are just taking orders from a failed administration. As a member of the military, you can't pick and choose your battles, you just need to do what you are told.
To your addition. Parents would never let their children fight in this war...How old are you? There is no way my parents were going to control my life at age 18.

You need to open your eyes, I hate it when people think that the soldiers in Iraq are fighting and dieing over there for the president. You don't have to support the war if you don't want to that's your right as an American citizen, but the least you can do is show some respect to the men and women who are giving their lives so that you can have the right to say things like that.

Not everyone in the military necessarily "likes" Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld (Rumsfeld is irrelevant anyway, seeing as how he's no longer the Sec. of Defense); but whether or not you "like" the president or not as a soldier is completely irrelevant. You follow orders, period... it's not your place to "like" them or agree. Politics have no place in the military--the military wouldn't function and would fall apart if politics were allowed to run as rampant in the military as it is in civilian government.
Oh, and they are fighting for your freedoms, and on more levels than you care to admit. If nothing else, you ought to thank those who volunteer to sacrifice several years of their lives and their rights, just to take your place and give back to their country; if there weren't any volunteers there'd be a draft. The military needs people; those who volunteer are continuing to ensure that there won't be a draft.

Hey, dumb @ss, I'm not going to run through this whole pile of diatribe you wrote, but I will answer the first stupid question.
If those people in Iraq and Afghanistan didn't step up and volunteer for military service, your punk @ss would either be there or in jail, via the draft !

You are part of the problem. If they hadn't volunteered like I did in 82 then there most likely wouldn't be a United States and you most likely wouldn't be alive.

I'm with you. I did not ask them to volunteer and I did not ask them to go over there.
On the other hand most of these soldiers are kids (late teens, early 20s) and frankly the military has a huge advantage in recruiting. They exaggerate any advantages to signing up and downplay the risks involved. And many of the recruits are getting little or no objective advice before they enlist.
Also the "volunteer" label starts to lose its meaning when tours of duty are extended, people who planned to be serving stateside get shipped oveseas, etc.
And of course those in the military proper are getting screwed as far as their salary. They are getting paid a small fraction of what those doing similar things for military contractors are getting paid. Imagine what the government would have to pay people to be there if people were free to walk away any time they wanted to. If wars were run on an open-market basis those who risked their lives and survived the ordeal would be set for life.
p.s. The idea that the war in Iraq has anything to do with "freedom" is a steaming crock of horse dung.
