The shots only last for about 45 minutes. The doctor is amazed. He said that it should last for 2-4 hours. I am in so much pain. And this is not the first time. It is every time.

Any ideas?

Some people simply aren't affected by Novocaine; you would appear to be one of them. There are plenty of other numbing anesthesias available to your dentist; if he hasn't tried a different one, then you need to find another dentist. If all else fails, you can be put under a light general anesthesia to have dental work done; there's certainly NO reason for you to have to deal with pain during dental work!

Some people's biochemistry is such that pain killers don't work well/much/at all.

Have you ever met someone that can drink like a fish, so drunk that *you* are empathically feeling the hangover (s)he's going to have in a few hours...then they have absolutely no negative side-effects...ever? I do. Same sort of thing. My friend had his finger crushed between two engine blocks. Four ring blocks later, *none* of them had any effect.

Add in how infected something is...the more infected/irritated the less likely the pain killer will work.

Last time I went in for surgery (Day surgery for all 4 wisdom teeth being removed), I clearly remember reaching "34" when counting down from 100. I have spotty recall of numbers below that, but, shortly after 25 or so I have no memories until I awoke in the recovery room afterwords. I was told I started waking up halfway through the surgery too, and they had to dose me again.

Your metabolism and body chemistry effect how well, and how long a drug will effect you. You happen to (unfortunately) have either a high tolerance for the narcotic in question, or your body simply metabolises it too fast.

Incidentally, as for having the surgery under a general anaesthesia...remember that every time you go under a general, you are risking possible...permanent...consequences, although that is *very* rare, given the number of surgeries performed daily.

Whoa! That happens to me too. Once I had 5 shots and never got numb. My dentist was also amazed and didn't have an explanation for it. He did say though that people who do drugs (heroin I think) usually don't get numb from Novocaine but I don't do any drugs!!!

On some people it just doesn't work, my doctor always recommends taking a motrin 600 before I get there, and if there is an infection sometimes novocaine doesn't work as good and as long.

Novocaine doesn't work on everyone in a consistent manner. It could be your metabolism, whatever. You can attempt to possibly look to be knocked out. Its possible, people have done this...its not cheap.

Same thing happens to me, it doesn't work at all on my sister and my brother...I guess it's genetics.
