As a former Marine, I think the Marine Corps bootcamp is still tough, but the young recruits (those born since 1980) are not as mentally tough as the "Old Corps". I doubt that any Marine unit trained in the past five years could endure what Marines encountered in WW2.

We live in a different world now. Different warfare. Different political objectives. In the old days our Marines were allowed to win wars. Now it's a cat and mouse game with no clear winner. This makes the U.S. military look weak to our enemies. However, the Corps can still kick butt. If the troops in the field didn't have one hand tied behind them, there wouldn't be a terrorist left alive.

I was 62 years old on September 11, 2001. When I saw New York on fire, I rushed to the local Marine Corps recruiting office... they wouldn't take me, but I tried. Once a Marine, always a Marine. Semper Fi !

So tell me, sense when does a Marine need high tech gizmo's in order to put his boot in your face? It's true, they have a lot of new things and people smart enough to use them well. They are still tougher than any other normal branch of military. Not as tough as they used to be but being tough is a thing of what they situation requires and they can get extremely tough even now if the need be.

It might be true, but do you know anyone else that is crazy enough to sign up? The Marines are the best for their brains, their ability to adapt and overcome any situation. When things go wrong, we call in the Marines, because they can get the job done. Do you want tough looking people that dont know squat to defend your country? Or would you prefer people that are the best of the best guarding your country? Face it, the Marines are the Worlds Police Force! We do it in the dirt!

The good ones old school or new school are still tough. Don't assume though that the Marines nowadays are smarter. A LOT of kids these days can't spell or think fast. Hell most of the high schools now MAKE them have calculators for EXAMS!!!!!! They don't have to use their brain, the computers and gizmos do it all for them......A good number of the young people in their teens and 20's are dumb as a rock because their parents are too afraid to kick their a$$es and make them strong and teach them COMMON SENSE. It is easier to baby them through failure than it is to do their job. That makes for a piss poor group of young adults.

There are different levels of toughness. For instance it use to be if somebody lost a body part they were sent home. Now people missing a foot or a leg are even on the front lines or at least still active duty.

They are just as tough. The DIs still physically punish you will jabs and kicks, it's just they are more tricky. Their favorite is in the pits because they can be trickier. I spoke to a retired Marine at Parris Island 2 weeks ago and he said that it is still just as tough as when he was in, especially the crucible during boot camp

I've read, and seen a 60 minutes on the enviroment in boot camp. It seems they have let up a little because they can't afford to have as meny drop out.

Also i know a few marines, old and new. The younger ones are still solid guys, but the 45-65+ year old Marines are by far the toughest people on the planet!

i haven't gone through boot camp so i have no clue what you guys go through, but talk to older marines, and some of my friends that have recently gone through i find that the older generation is more physically tough, and had to do more in boot camp. and to day we have more technology to do some of those tougher jobs, there for younger generations are more intelligent. but in all Marines have been and always will be the toughest of the tough.
