but my wife has a huge problem with it. I told her i would use a cable slide lock, put it in a locked case in a gun safe. I only want it for the sport... going to the shooting range with my buddies. But my wife is scared out of her mind. Any advise from experienced gun owners with freaked out wives??

By the way, i'm looking at the Springfield xd45 and the S&W m&p .40.....

well first, before you purchase it, you need to find out why your wife is so against it. as this could lead to further problems down the road, such as divorce. is it that she is uneducated about firearms? or is it from all the negative feedback in the movies and news? as the wife and i both grew up in the country and both realise the benefit from owning firearms. with my first marraige, when the chilren were old enough i took them to the woods and properly trained them on all the aspects of safety before allowing them to shoot, and then taught them the proper way to shoot and handle the firearm so they respect it. now with the wife i have at present we have kids and grandkids at home and all of them know about our firearms, they are educated and they never, never even think about playing with them as they have respect for them! they are locked up and ammo it locked up in a seperate location.

so first you need to find out why she is so against a gun in the house, may be something in the past such as a terrible incident, loss of relative accidentily. but find out why before you buy or you my be sleeping alone.....

IF she is a dog person try this: A dog by it's nature is more dangerous than a firearm. Go on to explain that a dog has a mind of it's own and can always go back to it's nature.

A firearm is an inanimate object that is constrained by the laws of physics. A firearm is incapible of loading itself. Modern ammunition doesn't just go off.

I've seen an XD accidently fall to the floor that was fully loaded. Thannks to it's three safeties and the modern ammo nothing happened other than guys scattering.

After I got my carry permit, and went to visit my mom it took some explaining of the rules of when I draw, where I carry, and why I started to. It took a while.

Its okay my dad and I go to the shooting range all the time. Just keep the gun seperate from the bullets both in locked cabinets. Plus most gun carriers have there own lock on them anyway (or at least mine do). Tell her its fine if you take proper precautions nothing will happen.

Well your choice of handguns is very personal but you'd be okay with either model. Now your wife's attitude... Keep the peace but try to compromise. Consider buying a lock box for your gun, like one with a 3 digit rolling changeable combination.

Good luck!

Take her to a shooting range. Find someone with a small cal handgun, provide her with ear protection and get her qualified instruction on shooting. Once she understands the safe operation of a handgun she'll likely feel safer having it in the house. To find out how you can do more to secure the future of our shooting sports. "Out of her mind" is a telling turn of phrase. If she remains in that condition even after you've educated her on the extremely low risk associated with gun ownership, buy your pistol. That or sell your manhood on eBay since she won't be letting you keep it much longer anyway.
