Well...there are books out there that can cater on your interest.
Most atheists out there started with Carl Sagan's The Demon Hunted World. The best book I can recommend for the lay man's understanding about atheism is George H. Smith's Atheism: The Case Against God. Richard Dawkin's book The God Delusion is also OK. But compare to Dawkin's I highly recomend Sam Harris's End of Faith - well...that's my personal choice.
For a more philosophical approach you can also read Michael Martin's Atheism - A Philosophical Justification.
Hope this list can help.

I would say Dawkins but I have my reservations in regard to him. I can understand Christians trying to convert others - they have a mandate to do so. I just don't get Dawkins. Why does he care if another person believes in the Deity? If you say that it's because religion has caused many deaths, the counter to that is that Stalin and Pol Pot and other communist regimes have killed millions too. If you give him a try, counter his argument with something from the religious point of view. C.S.Lewis or Tom Harpur, for instance. You'll never be sure anyway, unless you have a closed mind.

The best one I can recommend is "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins. It goes into considerable detail about the evolutionary origins of morality and "good" behavior", how religion may be an unintended side effect of another evolutionary adaptation, why the world would be a better place if religion ceased to exist, and many other fascinating subjects.

Dawkins is the guy everyone likes now. He has several books, take your pick.
I personally was into Carl Sagan, but it just gets sprinkled in around his love for science, and most of that is now dated. I still really liked his style.
