Well, first you have to have a company sponsor you. You can either work for a direct writers company like GEICO where all your getting paid for is your salary with no commissions but they do pay for your training, license fees, and renewal fees to be a license agent. And since they are a nationwide company, as a sales professional you will more likely be license in other states too to sell auto insurance. So, getting a license is easier because they will walk you and help you and train you.
On the other hand, if you work for a non-direct writers i.e. State Farm, Farmers, Allstate, Mercury, etc. you can still get your license but because you build your own book of business you will get commissions on all your customers. The down side to getting your auto insurance agent license is that you are on your own. Meaning you have to study on your own, go to Mike Russ or any other insurance school that will prepare you for the test. You have to pay for your licenses and renewal fees. I believe some companies do reimburse you but not sure so you might want to ask them.
So if you just want to get your license and then open up your own agency your best bet is to go with a company that will help you get the license with no to minimal fees to you and then once license you can go move on to a better company that suits your needs.
But remember when you get your license you will need to take continuing educational classes and they also have fees and you must be sponsored by a company to continue having an active license.

For auto insurance they now have a 40 hour course you can take for personal lines only. I took this course it was really easy. Go to www.mikeruss.org for more info. Be sure to take at least 2 cram courses and go to the study hall for at least 2 hours before you take your test. The school can give you all the info on how to apply online for the exam. Good luck!!! This is a really good school. I passed on the 1st try because of them.
