Well, they're taught that all goodness comes from their god and the devil is the author of all lies. Atheist not believing in their god sort of logically makes them 'of the devil', so that kind of leaves out the possiblity that those who don't believe in or worship their god can have any goodness in them. If all they know is people who believe in their god, and they see that those people sin just as they do, they tend to believe that those that don't believe must be even worse.
Some get past this by saying that god can do good even through non-believers, but that kind of takes the free will concept out of the equation. In the end, it really is up to the individual to make their own choices about what is good and what is not. Once they are exposed to good people of other faiths, they tend to back off such hardline stances.

It's not just the atheist. We all have a sinful nature.
and Christians DO NOT have a get out of jail free card. Just because we are forgiven doesn't mean we don't reep what we sow....:
Galatians 6:8
7Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature[a]will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.
Just because many christians decide to turn their eyes from the above scripture does not mean they get to sin and are forgiven and do not pay the consequences of sin. That is a false belief.
Atheist may have a moral code and abide by it without the requirement of God. which is their choice, but they are not complete, their lives and/or spirit is hollow since everyone was created with a spirit which is the essence of God, the need to praise and worship or seek spiritual enlightenment, the need to ask the questions you do.
That comes from the spirit within you that is a direct link of your father/ creator, reaching out for you to seek him.
NOw if a person is an atheist than doesn't that mean that they don't believe in sin?
ANyway about the christian population in jail, a lot of people who have been incarcerated have believed in the notion of God, and have therefore called themselves christian that does not mean they are followers or actually practicing believers. Many of that population have not been believers and in that place have chosen to believe and follow christ.
Being christian does not mean you automatically are perfect, it means that you have chosen the harder life, you have to watch your step, and though you have help and God equips you with what you need to over come, it is a trial an err and a choice at every step. It is the misunderstanding of the word that makes people think they get a clean slate every time and do not pay for the mistakes they commit. We all do.

What makes you think that Christians have a "Get out of jail free" card just because we believe in God? If you continue to commit the same sins after you've accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior, there is something seriously wrong with your faith walk. Either you haven't surrendered your life completely to Christ, or else there is a deep-seated spiritual problem that you need to deal with.
If you continue to do the "sin and repent, sin and repent" thing, you're apt to end up with the kind of conscience that Paul describes as "seared with a hot iron." Like skin that's been scarred by hot metal and lost its elasticity, you've lost the ability to repent sincerely and are just mouthing words that you hope will placate God.
The reason that there is a high 'Christian' population in prison is because many prisoners convert during their incarceration. Whether this is a sincere change of heart or an effort to look good to the parole board, only God can say.
As far as atheists are concerned, they can be very moral persons, but they are still sinners, just like everyone else. They are in need of our Savior Jesus Christ's forgiveness, no matter how moral and 'good' they feel that they are.
Just one sin is enough to disqualify you for perfection, which is the standard that God holds all of us to. But when we accept Christ, His righteousness is imputed to us, and God sees us as clothed in His perfection. That is the difference between a moral, but sinful atheist and a moral, but forgiven Christian.

"Now we know tht whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. Rom3:19 , "For ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory God.."Rom. 3:23. Everyone sins, yes even Atheists who don't believe in sin. As for "Getting out of jail free card" You obvioulsy haven't been reading the bible. Read the book of Romans and the Book of James. I am a Christian and yes I do have a fear of the Lord, a fear of being without him, the reason I try to do good is because I love him, he gave his life for me and I want to honor and glorify him in all I do. What reason do Atheists have to do good, infact what is their definition of good? What standard do they hold their idea of "good" to? As for the Christians in jail thing. Most of the people in prison became christians after getting into jail. Sometimes someone has to go to the depths to see the light and love of the Lord. THere's alot of hurting people in prison systems and Jesus is there only hope, what hope do you have to give them?

For All have Sinned & come Short of the Glory of God! And that doesn't even account for "Original Sin" from Birth. Problem is U are going to Hell not for Ur Sins, but for Not Accepting Christ!!! Christ paid the penalty for Sin 2K. ago!!! No One can abstain from Sin hence the need for Christs' Perfect Work (Ur "Get Out of Jail Card") on the Cross!!! Funny U mention Jail...as this is often the Only Thing that "Snaps" people out of their "Rebellious State". It is often the First time they have been presented the "Good News" & Choose to Accept & Follow Christ, knowing that their way of doing things puts them in Bondage (Jail)!!! So when U go "Judging" people in "Jail", Ur "Twist" that Christians are in "Jail" really doesn't work!!! John

I don't carry the sins of my parents, nor the sins of Adam and Eve, sin is a religious term for religious followers.
I guess it was OK for Christians destroy other cultures and their history and traditions, to go on Crusade's, Perform Inquisitions, to buy, sell, and even kill slaves, and don't forget their children as well, also the Native Americans, bombing of abortions clinics, etc....Oh don't forget that the American President is Christian, and how many lives have been lost on both sides for starting a war with the wrong country that had nothing to do with 9/11, which was built on lies to begin with.
Why do many Christians think that atheists will sin because they don't have a god to keep them in line? Because the Christians are brainwashed and they want to rule the world.

The Christian creation myth, the book of Genesis, contains a bit of information that should settle the issue of morality among non believers rather conclusively.
When Adam & Eve ate the 'apple' they gained the knowledge of Good & Evil. That knowledge was equal to Gods. (3:22 "And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil:")
Moral judgement is, according to the Bible, therefor, inherent in all of us. Anyone, whether they are Christian or not, knows the difference between Good and Evil.
Even Atheists.

It's because of our sin nature that God sent His only begotten Son, Jesus to the earth to die in our place for our sins and our sin nature.
Acceptance of Jesus as our Lord and Savior and repentance of sin is what God requires for salvation.
If a Christian continues to sin willfully then, he has not accepted Jesus as the Lord of his life. He would still be a Christian but Jesus will judge whether he is truly His or not.
Christians are bound by love not fear. That is love for God and for other people. Yes, it is a problem when a Christian messes up because it is a reflection on Christ and other Christians.
A Christian is accountable for what he does because as a Christian, it is my main purpose in life to bring others to Christ. But you must remember that the only difference in you and me is that I am a forgiven sinner.

Christianity literally is used as a get out of jail free card in the prisons, too--it shows that a prisoner's been "rehabilitated." And of course, there are religious programs in prisons for alcohol and drug rehab and general anti-******* lessons.

I don't walk around worrying if people are going to sin or not. I will say though I have yet to meet anyone believer or not who says they have never done anything to violate their own conscience. If a person did say that I would question their voracity.
