Some of them may realize that they don't have much of a future to look forward too.

I believe that this is a family, distraction and the people you involve with issue. If there is not a good relationship among the family members, a good example of love as an incentive between the parents and their children will be harder for them to accomplish their goals and their expectations for their future lives can be uncertain.

In the other hand the more distractions you have the harder that will be to focus on the real things, young people now are more into party and having fun than trying to make a path for their future, if the foundations which start at home are not strong enough then this will not help in their future development.

If you are involved with people that will encourage you to accomplish your goals, this will give a good effect in your future life, if you are surrounded of people that like to party a lot and get in trouble, you'll be in the same position soon, and distracted.

Family is a key point in this issue.

Good question!

It's not just young people.

Old people get too busy living it up, working their way up the ladder, enjoying marriage, and raising kids (or in some cases complaining about everything in general) - to really care about the future of themselves or this planet, unfortunately.

I know a lot of old people who could care less about their future, sadly (and I'm talking 50, 60 years and plus).
So you can bet if old people act this way...certainly the young will follow...

Mainstream media that is geared toward youths keep them unmotivated.

They are the "Me" generation, only concerned about themselves and the present. They are not focused on the future.

Maybe as parents, we did not instill in them serving others; rather than serving self presently; and we are seeing the consequenses of that.
