Is morphine less addictive than oxycotin? I only ask because I have a family member that has been on oxycotin for years (yes, obviously addicted) and her doc has now put her on morphine instead, and is making her take pain management classes. I'm not really sure if he's trying to get her OFF of narcotics or if he's just another quack.

It sounds like he has begun weaning her off Oxycontin. It's a long, slow, process and requires a lot of patience. If you're concerned, and this person is a family member, why don't you ask someone who is in the know?

Both are just as addictive and narcotics. I can't really say that morphine is a step down drug from oxycontin - they're pretty much both as potent. This doctor is not doing your family member any favors. A step down drug would have been Percocet, Darvocet or Darvon.

Talk to your family member and see if they will sign the HIPA papers so that you can talk to their Doctor about what the intent of the course of treatment is.
