If you come in at Penn Station (Amtrack), Madison Square Garden is right upstairs and if you come in on a bus, the Port Authority is a short walk.

If you drive to Dover, NJ (right along I-80)(or a number of other NJ towns), you can take NJ Transit trains directly into Penn Station, wich is directly under MSG (about 80 minutes, $1119.75 r/t except during rush hour).

Dover trains can also go to Hoboken (same fares as Penn Station); in which case PATH trains connect you with midtown ($1.50 each way) (the 33rd St station is a long block east of MSG), but given the extra block and extra PATH fare, Penn Station is the cheaper way to go.

You can also pick up the NJ Transit trains at other locations:

take nj transit from hoboken-stay in hoboken hotel, commute to penn station-right next door is madison square garden. path train from hoboken to penn is cheapest and fastest way. (15 minutes) transportation should cost 1.50 for each way fare.

force to Trenton, NJ, and take NJ Transit from there to Penn Station, then bypass up the escalator to seventh highway, and Madison sq. backyard's front is there. Thats your best guess...that way you reside out of Philadelphia altogether.

you could park in a garage or parking lot in hoboken or journal square in jersey city and take the path train to the last stop 33st and 6th ave (hoboken might be safer) or park in ft lee and take the bus
