I know I should know this but I am not really sure what it is exactly.

Maybe I had it pretty much right, but I have crossed in the middle of the street in front of a police car and they just wave.

jay-walking is when you cross a street where a no crossing
sign is posted. In big cities, you usually find white stripes
across a street where pedestrians are suppose to use
This violation is a misdemeanor and a violator can get away
with a reprimand or a fine.

Crossing a street or intersection on foot against the walk signal light or by not using the designated cross walk.

You can actually get a pedestrian traffic ticket for it!

It is a slang term for the above offense.

Basically, walking across the street not in the crossing lanes. It is a major safety issue. The crossing lanes are there for a reason.

walking across teh street instead of at the corner, its a wonder why so many of them are hit. you would think that by now ppl would learn
