Mormons are Christians that not Catholic or Protestant. The Protestants as a group invoke the same 'creeds' as the Catholic and Orthodox churches written in the 4th century under the direction of the Roman government. Historically, Protestants broke with the church because of differences in doctrine.
The LDS church is a restoration of the church that predates the invention of the 'creeds'. One principal difference between Protestants and Mormons is priesthood authority. Except for Anglicans and a few others, Protestants do not claim authority from God, but as ministers having authority from their congregations. LDS men have the authority to act on behalf of Heavenly Father.

Mormons are Christian but not Protestant.
The Mormons use the KJV of the Bible. The Catholics use their own version and most Protestant religions use the KJV or other version (not the Catholic version).
The Protestants are a break off of the Catholic Church. They all follow the Trinity (Nician Creed I believe). The Mormons do not follow that as they believe the God the Father and the Son Jesus and the Holy Ghost are not all the same but 3 distinct beings. (some Christians of other faiths believe this also but the main Christian religions follow the Trinity idea).

I am going to refute all of these answers that people are giving right now!
1) We are not polytheistic. We do believe that the God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost are three seperate beings, but we don't worship all of them as if they were God. We pray to God and only God. Personally, I don't get the idea of the Trinity anyway. How could they all be one if God sent down his son? Wouldn't that mean he sent down himself?
2) We do not have plural marriage anymore. If you hear about it, those people are not part of our church, even if our name is a part of theirs. Anyone who goes against the law of the state regarding to marriage will be excommunicated from the church.
3) We use the King James version of the Bible as well as the Book of Mormon, they go hand in hand. The BoM does not add to the word of God it just goes along with it.
All of these things should and do make us Christian. We are no cult that has secrets from the world, everyone is free to come and ask a member the things that we believe and practice. No one forces you to become LDS, you are counseled by our church to decide for yourself if it is right. The LDS Church has done so much good for others and has changed people's lives for the better, so why doesn't everyone just judge us on that instead of what they get off some weird site that has only half truths and lies?

protestants are Christian! Anyone that's not Catholic is Protestant. But we're all Christians
I believe Mormons list themselves as Christian Protestants.
Many others don't think that they are.

Mormons are Mormons. They are followers of a prophet. They don't have the same Bible as Catholics or Protestants. They are a cult.
Catholics use the King James version.
Protestants use the NIV version.
Baptists use the NASB version.
Mormons and Jehovah Witnesses use their own version of the Bible that is entirely different from the King James, NIV and NASB.
King James, NIV and NASB basically same the thing except word it differently. They are based on Hebrew and Greek scrolls.
Mormons Bible is different. If you read the King James, NIV or NASB, you will get the sense that you are the reading the same Bible. But Mormons is different. They don't have all the same books.
Each denomination has it's own Bible that they swear by. If you brought a Mormon Bible to a Catholic or Protestant church, you wouldn't be able to find the same passages.

Technically speaking, any Christian who isn't Catholic is a Protestant.
Then, within Christianity (and especially pseudo-Christianity) we find many cults. The more in contradiction with, or divergence from, the Bible a group is, the more it fits the definition of a cult. ESPECIALLY if there's a crapload of ludicrous "extra-biblical revelation" included in their supplemental dogmas. Thus, the Catholic Church is far and away the world's largest cult, and the LDS (Mormons) probably come in second, in that regard.
Bottom line: LDS Church -- Protestant, and very cultic.

Mormons are NOT Protestants, because they are not Christian. Their 'Jesus' is the brother of Satan. That definition is extremely unscriptural. They are no more Protestant than your garden variety Buddhist.
