Because other churches have been established that pretty much broke off from the Morman church. Some small communities have several churches within them. Some people just hold their own services with a few friends and family and avoid going to church, but consider themselves mormons. Alot of Mormon churches also turn a blind eye when it comes to that sort of thing, because it is illegal, but the police don't do anything about it. The jails are filled mostly to capacity and it would be better to have a rapist jailed instead of a man who is just trying to be happy with his several wives (not really hurting anyone). Everyone pretty much looks away, but it goes on, that's why, no one is saying that all Mormons are polygamists, but there is a large population of them if you go out to the mid-west area.

CTR - isn't that like a Primary 7 year old?
I'm willing to bet your grand or great grand parents have polygmous relatives.
Also check your D&C section 132 - It's still there, so it's not actually removed from doctrine. It's unlawful, and was unlawful from the beginning of US history. God must known that.
So, until it's off the books, and all the remarks made concerning it's divine authority are remove, mormons = polygamy.

It's what the media likes to focus on, even though there are only SOME sects that practice polygamy...
Umm, Seeking.the.truth., I'm confused: if there were far more MEN than women, then why in the WORLD would they reduce the number of available females EVEN MORE by assigning more than one female to each male?? That would leave even more males without mates. Shouldn't it have been "three guys for every girl" in that case, so each man could procreate? Makes no sense.
Peace.

>>Why do people think Mormons are for polygamy when it was wrong since 1890?<<
Because everyone knows the only reason they gave it up was so Utah could become a state.

Polygamy was deemed "okay" when the population of men far exceeded the population of women. This, in present times, is simply not the case and really should be "outlawed" in the Mormon church.
I have personally, always believed it to be wrong. I simply cannot fathem "sharing" my husband with another woman.

ex-mormon. I remember the mormons still preaching or harping that the doctrine would come back someday. Besides I see the side effects of polygamy, like the sexist additudes of it. No matter what, the side effects of it are still there, the women are to listen and be totally submissive and obediant to their husbands and never question what the husband/preisthood holder/demi-God says.

Because there are still Mormons who practice it. Colorado City here in Arizona has a bad problem with it. The police finally went in and arrested Warren Jeffs, the leader. However, the town still practices it.

Well my husband has an uncle that has 5 wives. Most of his family has had only one wife except for his uncle and his grandfather.
Technically if you marry in the church for all eternity and your wife dies, and then you marry again for all eternity you will practice polygamy in eternity. Last I heard this is okay and accepted within the church.

Because the world takes the negative of any religion and uses that as the foundation of what is wrong about that particular religion. That is why I don't put any emfaces on religion, besides it really all boils down to what you believe. The traditional stuff fades away.

(I knew what you meant) I don't know. Not really. Polygamy was practiced for a reason, and outlawed for a reason. The Lord began and ended it. It was not the choice of the people but the choice of the Lord.
