about the troops in Iraq? I mean no one donates money for them or offers them any special benefits? They have student discounts all over the place but when we ask for military discounts they laugh. Just recently I went to the movies and asked if they had military discounts but they didn’t they only had student discounts. I'm pretty sure the college kids deserve it better than the poor veterans.
When I was fighting in Iraq I wanted Americans to show their gratitude but it felt like they didn’t care. I think the people need to give the soldiers of this war far more appreciation for what they have been through.

we're not looking for pity or money it's a simple respect they deserve for risking their lives. Because being deployed to a senseless war opened my eyes to things we take for granted. I grieve for my friends that will not come home, due to America believing in a piece of intelligence that had no merit. I took my duty seriously, though I feel they took their duty carelessly, and at my and many soldiers sacrifice. Like I said I we dont want money or pity the only thing I hope for is that years from now we can look back and with truthfulness say, "It was all worth it".

Not receiving discounts was simply and example of how the military is treated. I could care less if I paid $9 instead of $8. It's just sad how soldiers are not valued. That's all.

They are underpaid, unprotected, unfunded and risk their lives for an uninformed bunch of sheep who follow the liberal media. Members of Congress should support them with the best in military equipment, not stupidly question their leaders. We do owe them more.

First, I want to say Thank You for protecting my freedom.

I felt the same way when I left the Army. All I heard was, "You have military benefits, so you have it good." Bunk! First off, I had an injury not dealt with while in the Army so I went to the VA hospital. Good Heavens! the care is great if you are a homeless vet (they will sometimes let you spend the night in the waiting room) but they always tried to solve the problem in one visit, which wasn't long enough.

Next, I spent the first three years out of the Army with my "five point preference" as a temporary or contract employee going job to job trying to support my family. I also ran in to trouble because soldiers are close to each other and I had adapted that into my life. The trouble was that I had a job as a security guard and tried to get a young female to not walk with her head down when crossing a busy company entrance. I was polite and said nothing wrong. Her boyfriend approached me aggessively and tried to accuse me of something, but could not think of anything. This is the respect I got for looking out for a stranger's well being!

Coming back into American society is a rude awakening, but don't let it doubt why you served this country. Society may not care as a whole, but there are those of us who do care and thank you for your service.

As for the person who said "we work very hard and pay taxes", Soldiers, Airmen, Marines, and Sailors all pay taxes too when they are not deployed. And guess what, they work harder and longer than you, so your excuse not to have respect for the service men and women is invalid.

This is from my brother who is an exmarine. What are you talking you don't get discounts you get free housing, electrical, medical, ect.. and the only thing you had to pay for is your car. I was never richer than when I was in the service. You get this all free from the taxes that the Americans pay. If you want the movie discounts become a student.

As for the Americans you say do not appreciate you where I am from all soldiers who come home are given a hero's welcome. They are given an escorted limo ride from the air port to their home town courtesy of us so called ungrateful Americans. They are featured on the news and front page of our newspapers. At sporting events you are recognized and the whole stadium stands and applauds because we are so ungrateful.

Go to your DMV and your veterans office and see what type of discounts you can get. Those benefits are there from our taxes all you have to do is apply for them. You get discounts at vet hospitals, loans on houses, and an education courtesy of all us ungrateful Americans.

I have a friend who was wounded in this war and another on his second deployment. I have never once heard them complain about discounts from a movie theater that a student got and they didn't. They talk about their honor to have served to stop the terroist that came to our home land and attacked us. I don't know where you are from but here where I live we appriciate all the soldiers and they are given the respect and gratitude from most of us.

..do you recall after 911 there was a huge amount of money sent to the welfair of the survivors...as assistance money for them to use..??...well...guess what... if a military person gets killed, his survivors get something like 12 hundred bucks..and the 911 survivors...they get a half million or so...go figger.
Plus..those folks working in the towers were makeing nearly a hundred thou a year or more..a inlisted man makes what..12 -15 thou.. ??
Not only that, consider this...a 'private' military person working for say haliburn'um makes well over a hundred thou a year, and extroidinary bennifit packages..along with other perks and tweeks that make a military mans income shamefull...
It makes me so ashamed of this administration now ... i feel as tho i owe every service member serveing an opology... there is no excuse for the discrepency in military budgets and the pay alloted the people who are in our military...it is governmental incompetance to the utmost. Even when something like Walter Read comes up and the public finds out about it, the 'answer' to problems is to send more burrocrats to clabber up the inconvienance with more red tape.
It makes me mad as hell.. the worst of the lot are those thieves in congress and the house...I always thought THEY were one of US...but that has gone south in a hurry...the first thing they do is vote themselves a raise when they get a chance..
I hope this next administration has more ethic than this last one...thats a fact.
What a cruel joke .. I'm sorry i EVER believed in a republican...and voted for it, too... god, i'm sorry.

I live in Virginia and there are still a ton of businesses that have "show your military ID" or "military and families discount" signs proudly displayed. I am sorry that you do not see those where you are. I am sure there are plenty of people who do not support the troops and that is a sad statement.

For those who say they pay plenty of taxes to support the military I would suggest that they try to live on a military salary. Oh, and let's remember that each and every one of these men and women have volunteered to protect all of us.

I am not military but am proud to say that my daughters consider a military career as a strong attraction to them. They feel that the chance to help others is more important than a self serving career.

living in NAVY TOWN, VA, we don't see a LOT, but from time to time the military (ACTIVE, RETIRED, RESERVE) do get some goodie hits from the civlian community. When ever I travel, where ever I go, I always ask DO YOU GIVE MILITARY DISCOUNTS? My clutch cable broke on Rt 64 outside Louisville, KY and we had to spend a couple of nights in a hotel. First thing they did was give me a 10% discount because my car broke down. I asked, Do you give military discounts? She looked at my RETIRED Navy ID..and added ANOTHER 20%! One of the many times I went to D.C. (as part of my job), I stopped into the Aerospace Museum, went to the theater in there and asked if they gave miliary discounts...$2.00 off! And the list goes on. There's a car dealer here in s.e. VA who gives and ADDITIONAL $1,000 discount to active, retired and reserve military during this special they're having. You never know unless you ask. Don't get discouraged...keep asking.

I care, but I do not support a government that doesn't have our troops best interests at heart. Yes, I think there ought to be military discounts for our troops and those that are veterans, but that will come from business. Right now, it is business that reigns King! The chimp made that kind of life what America stands for - right now. However, I do think a lot of people are getting sick of all the hate and greed we have in America these days. The election in 2008 will tell America what America wants and needs!

As a Veteran I understand where your coming from, we were promised the world for serving our country in time of war and peace but like the American Indian our gov. and the people of the USA has forgotten those promises, given to our service men and women. We need to stand up as Vet's, supporters of Vet's and supporters of our Troops to tell America and the World we will be heard and want what was promised, Like Heath Care for life ( and it should not Cost us anything ) a continuing Education program that is free and this is the tip of what has been promised.

Please Support Our Troops and Civilian Contractors

I am currently assigned to ROTC on a college campus and I get thanked all the time. I have had no negative feed back from anyone here and this is supposed to be a "liberal university."

I have even had my lunch paid for anonymously by people in town when I was in uniform. That has happened more than once. I feel guilty when it happens.

I get paid fine. Thank you to all the civilians out there!

I can't think of one vet that I know, that joined any branch of the service for the "bennies". You'd be surprised at what is available, if you look. Are you a member of the local American Legion, VFW, DAV or other organization? I live in central PA, and when I go to a local bar for a beer, it costs $2 - 2.50, but when I'm in the Legion it is $1.25. I went to school and received a degree at the Univ of Pittsburgh, thanks to the VA, not only 100% paid for, but I also received a monthly income while going to school. Look around, and ask around, and more importantly, get involved, you'll be happy you did.
