I have a front tooth chipped, and we don't exactly have the funds to go to a dentist and have it cosmetically touched up. Perhaps I'm vain, but appearance means a lot to me. I was thinking about just taking a nail file and just barely filing it down a tad. Just so the edge isn't so prominent. Here are some pictures of it so you can see what I am talking about...
(Not for the squeamish, it is pretty gross getting a close-up on a persons mouth!)

I wouldn't try doing this yourself. I work for a dentist and we don't charge to file down a tooth. Call around and see if there is a dentist in the area that is willing to file this for you without charging much or non at all. Looking at the picture though you will probably need a small bonded filling placed to fix it correctly, but filing it can do for now.

I would highly recommend against self dentistry. It may seem like a small edge to file down, but it's a tooth, not a nail. A nail file will not do the job. There is a reason why dentists use drills with special bits for filing down teeth, teeth are bone ... which is very hard. You would only frustrate yourself and ruin your nailfile if you tried it the way you are considering. You don't have the tools to file a tooth.
It may not be the answer you want, but you should save your money and go talk to a couple dentists about what it would cost to do the job. I think you may find that it is not as expensive as you think, and it will be done much better by a trained professional. You may have to learn to live with the chip in the short term.

Wether it's ok or not would of course be best answered by a dentist (which you stated you aren't going to). But if you had to do it your self you could use a dremmil tool (not sure about the spelling on that). They have different attachments, some less abrassive than others. I would think doing it yourself would NOT be recomended no matter what you used though. Also you better hope you don't have any nerve exposed! OUCH! Personaly, I would call around and possibly find a resonable dentist, especially if your appearence is that important to you (I don't think it would cost much, cause it wouldn't take very long). I can't tell you that this would end in a good result and you could possibly make things worse by attempting such a maneuver but I would suggest at least calling a few different dentists and explaining your situation. It is possible that they would let you make payments or it is just possible that one of them will do it on a charity basis. You will not know until you call so do this at least before doing possible further damage or going completely insane in the attempt and finding you will still need to make an appointment to get it fixed.

You can get the job with a nail file or any other instrument. But your risk chipping your tooth, or making it sensitive to cold afterwords.
The best way is go to the dentist, it shouldn't cost a lot making a job like that.

i dont rec. you trying to file it down on your own your probably going to make it worse. you should really see a dentist to get it filed down or even fixed with composite.
