The vet told my grandpa that when a dog wears a flea and tick collar and sheds, the hair has the chemicals in it and will kill fleas and ticks on the ground, not just on the dog.

My grandpa did not believe this.

My grandparents had built their house on land that was very tick infested. After about a year of using the flea and tick collar on the dogs-2 weeny dogs, they no longer had a tick problem on their land.

So the vet was right and the collars are wonderful.

We don't use flea and tick collars. We use Frontline on our 3 cats and our 2 dogs. I don't know why we don't use flea and tick collars though.

I don't really think one experience is enough to conclude that flea collars work for all animals in all cases.

Flea collars kill fleas by the chemical that is embedded in them - fleas have to get near the collar to work.

I really don't think the solving of the tick problem on your grandpa's land was down to flea/tick collars. I think if the collars hadn't been used the tick problem might have been resolved anyway.

Wonderful that your grandpa no longer has a tick problem - but this is no reason to recommend flea collars for anyone who has a flea and tick problem. I know from wider experience that they are usually very ineffective - there are products out there that can be guaranteed to work in most situations.

Collars are not as effective as other things, such as Advantage, Advantix, Frontline, etc. that treat the whold dog, not just around their neck.
