It is a stereotype. Police officers are often at places like Dunkin' Donuts and 7-11 because they have coffee and are open all night. Thus the stereotype of the donut eating cop is created and television loves to perpetuate that. BTW, I have never seen a cop on Law and Order at a donut shop. Same with NYPD Blue. There are many TV shows that do not show police officers at donut shops.

Same reason TV always associates carrots with rabbits.... teachers with apples.... computer professionals with Coca cola bottle glasses and pocket protectors... It's the "accepted" TV culture symbol of the subject being portrayed.

Truthfully? Rabbits can only have very few carrots in their diet and still remain healthy... the tops of the carrots are even better for them. There are some really handsome computer prof.s out there...

And, as a former teacher and current inventory specialist, I have to say, I'll always take fresh, glazed doughnuts over apples any old day.

Real life is rarely accurately portrayed by TV.

i don't know about the shows mentioned before me. BUT I notice even on TV shows where they cops are eating donuts doesn't always mean THOSE officers are lazy. Some of them are but not all.

Actually it was not just the donuts, it was also about the coffee. Why? Convenient stores were mostly open til past midnight and were prone to hold ups. So officers patrolling often checks these convenient stores if there was a problem, and guest what? the smell of donuts was so tempting and was so irresistable. What's next ... was the coffee.

The only place open at 1 AM was Dunkin Donuts. Now that other stores are open in the middle of the night, there are healthier choices for us. The stereotype is only because the donut store was the only thing open overnight.

I was a cop for 6 years and neither my co-workers or I ever ate doughnuts. Like it was mentioned earlier it's just a stereotype. I'm not going to say cops never eat them but not everyday! If they did they would be fat and lazy and not able to run after somebody. Do you ever watch cops? well you can see most of them are fit. There are a couple who are on the hefty side but believe me they are eating more than doughnuts.

It's a simple stereotype just like they say blondes are ditzy or if your black you must be a criminal or if your mexican you must have jumped the border. Simple stupid stereotypes!!

you watch far to much tv, this is your concern in life? shut the thing off, and get with reality, tv is not reality, and the more they tell you it is a "reality" show the more unreal it is. TV is in a world of it's own, always has, always will, don't let it drive you nuts. tv has so many false stereo types yu could make volumes on them.
