that hasn't been my experience. My house was built in the 20s, and I've lieved there for 4 years and I haven't had many troubles at all. One of the previous homeowners did some updates, like a new furnace & roof, so it's been ok. I do need to have some tuckpointing done, and I had some probs with the sewage system, but nothing major. The house is solid. Newer homes are just drywall & studs - you can tear those down with a claw hammer.

Most maintenance and repair goes into mechanical systems and the exterior and unfortunately the older the house the more likely these items will need attention. The good news is that the remodeled areas should not need work for several years with things like faucet cartridges and toilet valves.

I guess it would depend on how old the house is and how solidly it was built in the first place. You are more than likely going to have to take care of more things in a house as it ages than with a new house.

Typically they are harder to maintain because of the age of the matterial used in it.
Example is faucet washers. Old washers are harder to find than new washers and harder to replace.

It has been my experience in older homes, that they have been through all their "quirks" and are fairly easy to maintain. :)
