I plan to marry an American women here in Saudi. She has family in the USA. Would it be safe for me to go with her to visit them in the US. I like to wear a thobe, and have a beard.

It's safe. There seems to be more problems in suburban areas. Places like New York City, Columbia, SC and Tampa Florida seem to be okay. I haven't experienced anything wrong.

There was a Japanese tourist who visited Dallas a few years back. She decided to take a walk in one of the local parks one night. Now any native could have told you that you NEVER went to that park alone at night, but how could she have know. Her body was found in the morning.

My Aunt visited India. She went down a side street in New Deli, and was attacked by a pack of wild dogs. Being a Texan and armed with a can of mace, she was fine. Thing is, how could she have known.

There are some hard feelings about the fact that it was mostly your countrymen that were in those planes on 9/11. All the same, you'll find most people quit reasonable about that. What you need to be aware of is that you won't know what is dangerous here at first. Travel with a trusted guide and be careful that your cultural assumptions don't mislead you.

Please come, and be welcome.

I don't know how to answer that. You notice in the media how they portray Muslims, and how the US feels about them. On the other hand, you actually live here and realize that we're not all good ourselves. You should research a little bit about the states, or provinces and see how the sceneries are, and what season each one is enacting at the moment. You're doing nothing for yourself if you're asking this kind of question.

Your "thobe" and beard might draw some attention. You'd be accused of being a terrorist.

Naive people have associated anything muslim with terrorism.

It's a sad fact.

You will be very safe and sound, US is a great country. However, if you insist on looking different from others, you should not blame others for having a look on you for your novelty value. Besides, anything can happen to anybody anywhere irrespective of one's race, religion and creed. So if you happen to walk into unsafe areas at unsafe time and something happens, please do not blame it on your being Muslim. That means, if you come to US, it rains, you don't have umbrella and you become wet, it has got nothing to do with your religion. Your welcome level will not be uniform across the nation and if you expect that each and every individual should be happy to see you, it is over expectation, not only in US but everywhere, including your present country. So congratulation on your marriage and welcome to US.

It should be as safe for you as it is for us.

You will see people in all different types of dress and look. That's just us -- we tend to encourage individuality.

But for safety: Don't travel alone, stay with the crowds and don't go to isolated places where you might be at the mercy of those who are hateful and ignorant. Lock your doors.

It would also help if you act in a non-threatening, friendly manner, such as smiling, making eye contact, and using polite social greetings. Congratulations on your upcoming marriage, and I hope you enjoy your stay in the USA!

Well, take it from "One hot momma," that exemplar of Christian morals who can't stop flashing her flaccid side-boob to everybody. Americans are afraid of Muslims because of 9/11. That's pretty much a fact. It's not necessarily rational, but it's understandable, even though much of the fear is really based on good old fashioned garden-variety ignorance. So you may indeed have to deal with some xenophobia and racism - in fact, it's practically a given.

Its sad, but you may have to put up with some racist comments. The problem isn't nearly as bad as it was in 2001, though, so you should be perfectly fine. Most likely, the problems you have with people will stem from ignorance of your religion and backround, not true hatred.

It really depends on what part of the USA you are going. You will definitely get a lot of looks and stares, but in terms of safety, you should be fine, especially in CA or parts of NY

Asalaamu alaikum!

I pray your wife's family will welcome you with open arms!

Yes, insha'Allah, it is safe to visit the U.S. Sure, people may stare at you because you look differently from what they are used to. I am an American Muslima who wears hijab and modest clothing everywhere I go, and sometimes people look at me puzzled, but most are fine. There are some stories of anti-Muslim violence, but NOWHERE near say, the stories of violence against African-Americans of the 1940s, 50s, 60s... I live in Alabama (the heart of the Civil Rights movement), and I've only heard of one incident of violence against Muslims in my area.

I think--I hope--that Americans are learning tolerance and an appreciation of diversity.

Just have your passport and travel visa in order. May Allah be with you and keep you safe in your travels!
