I'd say Pitbull's because they seem very mean natured. But then again a Great Dane is much much bigger.

I dont know if either could take down a lion! lol! Lions are pretty big and even with three mastiffs the lion would out weigh the dogs! I dont know if I could just pick one breed.. on one hand "pit bulls" (by the way, pit bull isnt a breed, it is a term used to describe three breeds.. American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers and Staffordshire Bull Terriers) are small, quick, strong and very determind.. on the other hand mastiffs way out wiegh all three of the "pit bull" breeds. "Pit bulls" were bred for dog fighting, they were bred small (17-19 inches tall and about 30-60 pounds) for that reason. "Pit bulls" are small-medium breed dogs. The "pit bulls" that are over about 80-90 pounds have normally been crossed with a larger breed such as a mastiff to produce a large dog. "Pit bulls" are in no way mean natured!!! They tend to be animal agressive if they werent socalized well when they were younger, but they LOVE humans! "Pit bulls" again, were bred to fight dogs, but at the same time they were bred to be stable, dependible, loyal, devoted, people-friendly family pets! They are even know as nanny dogs for their love og children! They are not born mean, but just like any breed they can be made mean... Mastiffs are large, powerful dogs, normally around 27- 30 inches tall and around 170-180 pounds! There is evidence of Mastiff-like giant dogs dating back as far as 2500 BC in the mountains of Asia. Bas-reliefs from the Babylonian palace of Ashurbanipal (now on display in the British Museum) depict Mastiff-type dogs hunting lions in the desert near the Tigris River. They are remarkably like our modern Mastiffs, despite the passing of nearly 4500 years. Romans used mastiffs to fight in arenas, they were also used for hunting and war... I guess after saying all of that, if I had to pick one, I would have to say the mastiffs would probably have a better chance. It would be best if there was mabey one "pit bull" and two Mastiffs. lol! But, I would say with how big they lion is the "pit bulls" might hurt it but in the end I am sure they wouldnt make it. They Mastiffs probably wouldnt make it eaither because the lion is so big and powerful, but with the Mastiffs having a combined weight of around 510 pounds vs. the "pit bulls" at a combined weight of around 250-270 pounds (if they are BIG "pit bulls") they might have a better chance. Again, because the "pit bulls" are small- medium breed dogs they would probably be a little faster, but they were both bred to fight so I am thinking the Mastiff has to be able to do some serious damage. After alot of thought (probably too much.. lol) I would have to say the Mastiffs would have a better chance of taking down a lion then the "pit bulls."

if it is an African lion, it could kill even three mastiffs but with difficulty. note that it would take 10 or more wolves just to kill a lion.
