I live in a very small apartment and when you sit on the couch the air like almost blasts in your face. I was hoping I could put something over it that would direct the air down rather than straight out also hoping it would hide the ugliness of the thing.

I do not recommend covering the unit as the airflow to and from the unit needs to be unobstructed.Home Depot should sell airflow deflectors/diverters that will "throw" the air in a different direction.Most units do have a diverter in it but they generally don't make that much of a difference.

Most units I have owned had deflectors to direct the airflow in different directions. Covering it when renting is not much of an option. I painted mine to match the wall color.
