Most skateboards are pretty much made the same way - 7-ply canadian/california maple, save for those companies that are producing lighter/stronger boards with different deck constructions (air pockets, non-wood layers, etc..)

Almost Skateboards has a couple of new special decks that resist wear and breakage without sacrificing weight or strength. The Impact Support decks have carbon fiber discs embedded over the break points of their decks, which disperses the landing impact while maintaining rigidity and "pop". Then there are the Uber Light decks that have a layer of carbon fiber throughout the deck making the deck as stiff as metal, thus maintaining the "pop" while being lighter than most conventional wood decks. Now the Impact Support, I believe, cost about the same as a normal pro model, but I have seen the Uber Light selling for about $99.

Other companies have proprietary deck construction technologies- Santa Cruz has PowerPly and PowerLyte decks. Element has Helium, Featherlight and Fiberlight deck constructions, but I think Almost is at the forefront of building a deck that defies regular wear & tear, and promotes longevity with sacrificing extra weight. .

My son and husband both really like the element boards (Bam Margera). But also use Birdhouse (T. Hawk) and Blind. :) Decks do break the harder you are on them. Hope this helps!
