What can I use to uniquely decorate a large wall space?

I have a large wall space above the fireplace -- 20' ceilings. The space is framed by moulding above the fireplace. All in total probably 6' wide by 13' high. The moulding is white and the walls around it are a dark khaki. I want to do something unique -- from something as simple to painting the space a contrasting color to stacked stone (too expensive).

I've thought of doing box moulding in the area...even a stone tile. I don't want to hang a picture or a tapestry.

Any thoughts?

What if you found a unique glass structure that went along with the colors in your decor - if that is not preferable then a contrasting color would look very nice. Be careful with color choice - make sure that it is bright enough to stand out but not too bright so it is obnoxious.

There are sooooo many things you could do with that space! Here are a few suggestions:

1. Hang a great mirror.
2. Hang a metal sculpture
3. Do a faux-finish wall with texture. Email me if you want some great links to faux-finishing.
4. Hang a collection of mirrors (use all the same color frames, such as all gold) Here is a pic of this:

5. Display a collection. Do you collect vintage lunchboxes? Something like that could look great.
6. Create a decoration with tile. I wouldn't place it directly on the wall because if you get tired of it, it'll be a bummer to remove. Use a nice flat piece of thick wood. When the tile mosaic is complete, hang it.
7. Create boxes with molding. Start with the biggest box and keep making smaller and smaller boxes until the last box inside is small. Display a very small item inside the smallest box. You can have loads of fun with this idea, as you can paint the moldings all the same color, different colors, a different color scheme, etc. The smallest of russian dolls would look great inside the box.
8. Hang an oversized funky clock.
9. Hang an antique metal bed frame over the fireplace. It looks stunning.
10. Hang a collection of vintage or antique plates. Here's a possibility:

Couple of suggestions..

1. A faux finish, a single glaze application is beautiful and will add depth and class to that area.

2. Project an image onto the area, such as a flower.

Try turning dh wall space into a family tree!? You could always do it youself! Try adding a photgraph with each name.
To add a really personalized touch you can frame a sort of collection of photographs of some memorable moments of ur lif e.g. ur graduation day, very first bike/car, etc.
The frame should mix well wid dh wall, it could be handmade too! Made out of cardboard and sheet n colour it antique brown n maybe little pieces of mirrors!

Well, it isn't really unique, but I love the way a tall mirror looks above a fireplace. Just place in standing tall on your mantle, no hanging, and set off with various tall candles and foliage on the sides. :) Good luck!

if you don't want a picture, maybe a big clock iron clock would look good. If a clock is not what you are looking for i would suggest a piece of art made form metal. you can find some of those on ebay. a lot of them a really cool. good luck
