I recently purchased a power inverter and found out that the lighter in my car has a 15 amp fuse, and the power inverter keeps blowing the fuse every time I plug it in to the cigarette lighter, even with nothing in the AC plug. Is a 15 amp fuse on the lighter normal, or does that seem low? And are there any inverters out there that use 15 amps or less? I don;t want to keep blowing out the fuse every time I plug it in (even when no AC plug is in the adapter)

It sounds to me like you have a defective power inverter (or possibly a problem with the lighter socket). A power inverter with nothing attached to it shouldn't have anything close to a 15-amp current draw.

15 amps is a pretty standard fuse rating for a cigarette lighter outlet. If you're using an inverter for something that requires more than 15 amps, then you should connect the inverter directly to the battery with thicker wiring, instead of using it with the lighter outlet.

it depends on the wiring whether the fuse is 15 amps or something else. with nothing plugged into the ac converter it should not be pulling 15 amps though. It does take a smaller amount of power to run the converter but certainly not 180 Watts. You could try replacing the fuse with a higher amp like a 30 amp or 40amp fuse as long as you keep a watch on the wires to make sure they are not getting hot. Other than that it sounds like there may be an internal short on your ac converter.

Your inverter is causing a short circuit, trash it and buy a quality one with it's own fuse built in.
