he is smart. he waits for about 5 minutes (when we get to the bottom of the stairs) and then starts barking. today, i put food, toys and a ball into his crate to keep him distracted but he still barked. we lived on the top level with no lifts so it is very difficult to go back up. it is a very quiet neighbourhood and his barks ring through the whole place. what can i do to stop this? my neighbors are getting frustrated. he never used to do this,bu now he continuously barks. he used to ark for i 5 minutes and then stops but today, when we came home he was barking. i didnt go in while e was barking otherwise he'll think that barking means that we come home and let him out. right now, i kept him i the cage so he knows that if he barks, he stays in there. what can i do t stop him from barking?
cannot afford professional, or bark collars

Sounds like separation anxiety. Put an old sweater that smells of you in the room when you leave him. Practice this by building up gradually and doing it when you leave him in a room on his own and then return after a few minutes.
Before you leave him in the flat on his own give him a very good run. Tired dogs don't bark! Also leave him with a couple of Kongs filled with peanut butter to keep him occupied should he wake up!

First tire the dog out with a trip to the dog park and you can buy a bark collar for around $40. I leave the Tv on with a timer set so it turns off by itself. Low key departures and greetings too, don't make a big deal of going just go and same when you come in. You can leave a stuffed Kong or sterilized bone so he has something to amuse himself with. I put a few kibbles in the bottom and the top third is either Pure pumpkin, p-nut butter or spray cheese then frozen.

-It might be cheaper than a TV to turn on a radio. You could even use rechargeable batteries. It would cost more at first if you don't already have some and have to buy them. ( You could even run a recording of your voice talking to you dog)
- Dog treat as you leave.
- Talk sweetly to your dog if you return to no barking
-Feed your dog a small bit of food at his/her dish as you are leaving.
- Practice going out side for a few and coming back in. Try to calm you dog from the out side of the door.
Does he bark while in the cage if your home and just put him in for a while? Practice this so he can get use to the cage. He might not be use to the cage. Talk to him before letting him out of the cage until he stops barking. Then reward him with love when you let him out.
Good luck

From what you're describing it would desire to be separation stress, or it would desire to be boredom. How long has it been occurring? Has it continuously got here approximately, or is it basically a clean ingredient? I certainly have a chocolate lab that became very unfavourable, and it grew to become out that he became merely bored. No each and every time we bypass away the domicile we provide him chunk toys and handle toys, however the main inexpensive chunk toy we've got here upon is a cardboard container. he will chunk the cardboard to shreds and that i will come domicile to confetti, yet a minimum of my furniture and partitions are risk-free. in case you % to bypass down the path of chunk/handle toys, you merely desire a sprint handle in each and each. or you may desire to place a million/2 of your canines each and every day foodstuff allowance right into some diverse handle balls and feed her the rest while it's time for dinner (that way there is not any danger of her being overfed and gaining weight). If that's an ongoing problem, or if the handle balls do no longer help it is somewhat useful to take a rapid trip to the vet to verify her over. additionally, if the problem has merely those days raised its head for no obvious reason then you certainly would additionally desire to take her for a rapid as quickly as over. unexpected modifications in behaviour would properly be indicative of a few thing extra sinister. good luck, and that i wish this facilitates.

He's getting separation anxiety, not good. If you only put him in when you are gone for long periods at a time then try fooling him. Put him in there and then come back in 10 min, 30min, 45 min, 10 min, you know what I mean? Try to fool him so he knows that maybe you won't be gone for a long period every time you leave. Try to fool him by changing your routine off and on. Give him a treat when you leave not when you come back. Not sure if this will work but its worth a try. You could also leave an old shoe or something of yours in there with him unless your afraid he might chew it up. Good luck!

the best thing to do is get him a muzzle.
when you put that on him every time you leave the house he will know your going to do this and wont bark anymore.
i did this for a week and he didn't bark anymore when i left the house.

Trying leaving the televison on for him. He will think that you are still home. Also you could try leaving him out of the crate.
