Suffering is the result of human sin. The world is not the way that God created it and because of that, all are vulnerable to the affects of sin in the world. Why does one person suffer and another does not? Why do catastrophes happen to some and no others? It is because sin is in the world. But there will come a day when the Lord will return and cleanse this world of all sin and all suffering.
"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away" (Rev. 21:4).

She has probably heard all of her life that "God takes" people to heaven, as in "God took her to be with him"
God doesn't take people. He welcomes them home when they die. It is NOT God's fault that we humans are inheritly sinful and deserve to die. It was through God's love that he sent his son for our sins and we can be welcomed home to God when we die. Encourage her NOT to blame God.
God will never give us more than we can endure, but somethings death is the way out of the current circumstances. Her brother in law could have been experiencing severe trauma and pain, would she rather him be in a nursing home wasting away like a vegetable sitting on the counter. He allowed her brother in law to escape whatever it was that caused his death.
The cliche' that he's in a better place is very true. If he had a relationship with God then he IS in a better place, a place with no more pain or suffering.
Continue to let her cry on your shoulder and encourage her at every opportunity you can.

I do not have a soft kind answer to this. Life and death are part of the same. God was with the person that died. Her beliefs are still of this earth. The earth is temporary....death is part of each of us....this is not what she wants to here.....she is going through a grieving process where she has to blame someone...the only one there is God...he has big shoulders he can take it.....we are not puppets down here just acting out what we are commanded to do...that would take away from free will....

Isaiah 57:1
The righteous perish, and no one takes it to heart; the devout are taken away, and no one understands that the righteous are taken away to be spared from evil. Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest as they lie in death.
Don't get mad.
Psalms 37:5-8
Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun. Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil.

i personally don't believe in god...but i used to be a catholic...and what i had been told is god is the one who is holding you...he cannot change the situation because it is suppose to happen but he is the one who keeps you from falling out of the bottom...it doesn't seem as if he is there...because you cant see or feel him however if he wasn't there the pain would end your own existance...god can't take all of the pain because it is how we learn but he does support us when it happens and keeps us safe...at least that is what i was told...hope it helps

We are never alone in our sufferings. And while it may seem so, the Lord has not and will never abandon us. Consistent faith is the way to defeat that lie. All we can see is the corner, but God sees around the corner. Trust Him to lead you the way.

my best friend died when we were both 16.... she just collasped and died.... and the first thing that happened was a church tried to save me with their religion.... bullshit... i didnt need that and i get angry when i think about it.... i know that they were only trying to help me through the tough time, but they used all that peer pressure and hypmotising music that goes for about 40mins, and that preaching that made me feel guilty and stupid... i since left that and found healing within myself.... so do what you want but just listen from my point of view... she may just not want religion right now... be her shoulder to cry on, just as you.... then she can make up her OWN mind whether she with turn to a higher power.

Sin in this world is why people die. We are all going to die. He just died when he and others were not ready. Most people want to live forever.
I am more faithful to God now than I was before my Mother was murdered. I hated God for awhile, until I understood that He didn't do it.

Your god didn't LET it happen -- Since he's all-knowing, all-powerful, and could've prevented if he chose to, he was the one who DID the killing in the first place!
Console your friend by telling her that God WANTED her brother-in-law dead; since God is infalliable, it MUST be a good thing!
