There NO SCIENTIFIC reason at all for applying Kumkum and it is only on certain beliefs ideals and traditions of the Hindus. Sometimes it is used as a Prasad of God or Goddess people apply it.
Vermilion, powdered red lead, applied as a dot on the forehead, like the regular 'bindi or in the parting of the hair by all suhagans. It is worn by married women, as a visible expression of their desire for their husbands' longevity. Traditionally therefore, widows did not wear vermilion.
Red is the colour of power. Vermilion is thus a symbol of the female energy of Parvati and Sati. Sati is believed to be the ideal wife, one who gave her life for her husbands' honour. Every Hindu wife is supposed to emulate her. It is believed that Parvati protects all those men whose wives apply vermilion to their hair parting.
Sindoora is applied for the first time to a woman during the marriage ceremony when the bridegroom himself adorns her with it . Sindoora-dana, as this part of the marriage ceremony is called, is important today but is not mentioned before the Grihasutras indicating that it is a relatively new practice. It is also called Bindi. Bindi is derived from bindu, the Sanskrit word for dot. It is usually a red dot made with vermilion powder, which is worn by women between their eyebrows on their forehead. Considered a symbol of Parvati, a bindi signifies female energy and is believed to protect women and their husbands. Traditionally a symbol of marriage (vivaha), it has also become decorative and is worn today by unmarried girls and women as well. Widows however, usually do not wear a bindi...

I have no idea where these people get their answers. Its surprising how little we know about our culture and religion.
anyways, First of all, there is no scientific reasoning behind applying a KumKum on your forehead.
You put a KumKum on your forehead to respect your intellect. And it symoblizes that the intellect that you are given is a God's gift, so use it wisely, and for the betterment of humanity. It reminds you that God have given you the intellect, God has chosen you, given you the human body, so that you can use it constructively to do his work.
Anyways, it will take time to understand the meaning behind these rituals we've been blindly following.

When saints r on the path or reach the peak of spirituality. They share their experiences with the world. It can only be explained to worldly people with worldly matters which may create similar experience. However the actual experience is much more than that.
The coolness of kumkum on forehead is similar to the coolness they experienced on the path without kumkum and chandan
