not exactly what your asking
but there is a word for word movie of Matthew using the NIV by the VIsual Bible that's pretty good called "MATTHEW"
sometimes watching the actors helps put things together and see it as a whole.. it's a little like walking into the book
I personally like the ESV as it is an essentially literal translation... but will also sometimes read other works like THE MESSAGE... not a translation but helps to get a fresh look at things

ya know, i'm not even sure if there is a ''best.'' that's why i use more than one bible when i'm studying. i usually read from the new king james version, and if i can't understand something, or if i simply want to see the different wording (because hebrew, greek, and aramaic are a lot more precise than english), i compare the passage(s) with the new international version. as far as commentary goes, i like www.gotquestions.org
hope that helps.
peace.

Well....
I use the NIV study bible......great study tool.
And it's in lamens terms for all to understand. The NIV pulls from many different translations to give it an all-around great translation.
