I tried Atkins once and I got horribly ill from doing it. However, I do know of people who have lost weight on it but also know that a large chunk of them gained it back. Personally, I would check out SouthBeach or Zone if you're feeling low carb.

I'd also check out the websites for any diet before going on it. I think going on to the message boards daily helps quite a bit because you can compare experiences and constantly ask questions and just provides a level of support if your going for this diet solo.

And if you're looking for more diet information consumer reports last issue featured their ratings on popular diets and reported which systems worked.

Please talk to your doctor before trying this diet. It actually doesn't work for everyone and depending on a few things, it can be quite detrimental. A few of my friends have done the diet (followed it to the letter) by themselves and two ended up passing out while exercising. This is because the Atkins diet cuts out good carbs as well as bad, and without those carbs helping to fuel your body, you don't get enough energy. Also, Atkins is very high in bad fats and this is really bad for your heart. (Note that the founder of this diet died from a heart attack!)

I would suggest looking into the GI Diet (Glycemic Index). You can find two great books about it by an author whose last name is Gallows (I can't remember his first name). It's really easy to follow and it tells you exactly which carbs are good or bad, the protein you should eat (ie: not tonnes of bacon, which Atkins says is "okay"), etc. My mom is on this diet and has already lost 15 lbs. Also, doctors use this diet for diabetic patients, so you know it's doctor approved!

Anyway! Just my two cents! Good luck!

Yes, it is very bad for your health, plus you gain double the weight you've lost once you stop it. because the lack of carbs makes you burn muscle tissue, which in turn makes you burn less fat and have a slower metabolism. It is a myth that if you go back to a normal diet (healthy, but no fat etc) you can maintain the weight. You will have ruined your metabolism.
