Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. The best way to keep a coat looking great is to offer the dog the best food you can buy. Preferably with no more then 2 grains listed in the first 5 ingredients. Raw feeding is even better. You can also add in Omega oils like Salmon oil or flax oils.
It all starts with food! For shampoo's I like Horse shampoo's. White bright is a good one. 'Exhibitors' is the brand.
Best place to wash a dog is a kiddie swimming pool or the hose. The water can get cold though so it's good to get a long hose out with a sprayer on the end and have the water on, but shut off at the sprayer so the hose/water in it heats up in the sun. Fill a kiddie pool and let that water warm up too. Start bathing in there and then rinse with the warm water from the hose.

Well I own two of those three. And while they are similar they have some big differences. I wouldnt recomend border collies unless you are into outdoor sports, like jogging, and hiking. Or you are interested in getting into a dog sport such as rally-o, obediance, flyball, agility, discing, freestyle, etc. They are the most high energy of the three. They dont kneed livestock or a big yard but you will need to do something to keep them busy. Bored border collies are not fun to live with, and its a shame to waste that brain anyways:) They have a medium coat, relatively easy to care for as long as you brush it a couple times a week. They are also medium size 19-21 inches tall, around 40lbs. They dont always do well with small children and cats due to their tendency to herd. Collies are active, but on average require less exercise than the border collies. You have to keep in mind, while they are all herding breeds, collies and shelties are used as primarily pets now and it does show in the way they behave differently. Collies are big dogs, while females are smaller than males generally, there is no guarantee. Mine was 28`inches tall and 85 pounds. They require you to have a good knowledge of grooming, and even a well groomed collie will leave hair around. It`s not as bad as you may expect though. A trip to a groomers once a month and brushing a few times a week at home with help. As far as temperment, they have the best of any breed I know of. This of course has a lot to do with how they are socialized and trained aswell. In general they are friendly, get along with children and even small animals. Both breeds make excellent watch and guard dogs like all herding breeds. You already know about shelties:)

Brushing down her coat every day, feeding a high quality kibble (eg. Innova, California Natural, Canidae, Wellness, Eagle Pack etc.) and only bathing her 3-4 times per YEAR will keep her coat in very good condition. Look around in pet shops and ask for a good quality shampoo and conditioner (or 2 in 1) that will help in keeping the coat shiny.

Well, hair IS protein. The first step is your dog’s diet. Feed your dog a high quality, high meat base protein, dry dog food. This dog food should be a well-balanced food. Check the package label. Price is somewhat of an indicator of quality. Less expensive dog food will use poorer quality ingredients for protein such as hide, hair, hoofs and chicken by-products (what’s left after a chicken is processed, feet, beaks, intestines, etc.). While these ingredients are protein, they are also indigestible. Other dog food uses soybeans as their source of protein. Soybeans are an inexpensive protein. HOWEVER, they are also an INCOMPLETE protein, lacking in several important amino acids. Protein lacking amino acids cannot function properly, certainly not as high quality protein.
As to supplements, add only what your veterinarian or breeder advises. Whole eggs can be one of the most valuable sources of protein a dog can get, but only if cooked, and not in excess. Keep “table scraps” and treats to a minimum. Supply your dog with plenty of fresh water.
To give your dog a healthy, shiny coat, brush your dog’s coat frequently. Bathe your dog as necessary. When bathing use a high quality DOG shampoo and conditioner. DO NOT use soap or shampoo designed for humans as they are too harsh and can irritate your dog’s skin. One of the most important things to remember when giving your dog a bath is to make sure to completely rinse out all shampoo and conditioner out of your dog’s hair. If you don’t, your dog’s coat will be dull, itchy and your dog will most likely develop “hot spots”. Also make sure you completely DRY your dog, using lots of towels and/or a blow dryer.

I use a shampoo specifically for black coats that I picked up at PetSmart. Don't worry, it will get the white really bright as well and it makes the black absolutely SHINE. Also, a good dog food is essential.

I am a dog groomer. The best thing for a shiny coat is a good diet. Feeding low quality food will make her coat dull. Lamb meal and rice is the best for a shiny coat. I use Nutro Natural choice lamb meal and rice dog food. Thats all you need, no silly stuff like egg yolks or oil. To keep her clean, take her to be groomed regularly, every few weeks or so, more if shes outside more that in. A coat brightening shampoo will work best.

Hi,
My mom raises border collies. She swears by the following:
- one raw egg a week
- a bit of bacon grease poured over their dry food regularly. Not everyday as this can cause bowl problems.
-brush daily if possible as this helps the natural oil in their coats do its job of making their coats healthy and shiny.
She uses a citrus based human shampoo on her dogs. Any one works as long as it is not a harsh deep cleaning shampoo. Rinse really well and then use a citrus based conditioner. Rinse the conditioner out really well too. This also helps to eliminate fleas as they hate citrus juice. Let the dogs coat dry completely and brush as usual. Any shampoo with orange extract in it is the best. I have had great results with Dep shampoo and orange oil added. It is inexpensive and works great. The combination is 2 ounces of Dep to 4 drops of orange oil. The orange oil can be bought at a health food store. It lasts a long time for the size of the bottle. Dep is very inexpensive for a very large bottle. Your dog also smells nice. Any cheap shampoo with the orange oil added will work. Ihave a sheppard/ husky cross and my grandfather swore by this method.

If you use a purple coloured shampoo for dogs this will highlight the black and white and make them shine, to keep it that way, best to keep the dog inside. I used to leash him to the towball on my car and use the hose to wash him, now after six months he will just stnad still without the leash, make sure you dont wet their head otherwise they will shake all over you.
