In L.A. you can't get directly into SWAT. You have to served patrol for at least 4 years before even being considered eligible.

Taken from the LAPD Website:

How do I become a SWAT officer?

The Special Weapons And Tactics Team (SWAT), is a specialized unit within Metropolitan Division. All specialized assignments within LAPD are promotions, which require training, experience, and selection through the promotional process.

The entry-level position for those with the goal of becoming a SWAT officer is Police Officer I, Academy training and field probationary period.

Please see www.JoinLAPD.com for more information on hiring and promotions.

I'm sure SWAT in LA is a lot like special response teams in every other place in the world: highly competetive. You should apply as a patrol officer and expect to spend several years on patrol before being eligible to apply for a specialized position like SWAT, Gangs, Vice, etc. Expect to compete for the few open positions available on any special response team and realize that they only take the most experienced officers with great records, so if you miss the first time, keep trying. Good luck!

Apply for a position in the Police Force and volunteer to be a member of the SWAT Team. But first you must be really tough by exercising diligently and be mentally upright which could be augmented by reading more about police work.
