I think I was Atheist in my heart before I came here. I was just afraid to give myself this label since in my small town that is the same as being branded heretic or worse. Coming here has let me know that it was all right to be myself and that there are at least a hundred other stories just like mine.
Good Choice Lokasenna, Good Choice

I doubt if there are very many. More likely, they simply get up the courage to declare what they have long believed. Or perhaps long suspected, as would be the case if they had been calling themselves agnostics.

My own feeling is that I can identify with both atheists and agnostics because while I am a polytheist myself, I recognize those gods and goddesses as metaphors for something more abstract and esoteric. Ultimately, I am a Tarot reader and Cabalist, although a dabbler rather than serious student of the Cabala.

BTW, anybody but me disagree with the Yahoo spell-checker on the spelling of Cabala?

I don't know many. Music_Girl did, she had a lot of help from fellow atheists in finding her path. In her I also found a friend for life, which is a rare thing to find online.

Loka did, of course. Yay Loka!

And somehow I did too. I've always been an atheist, I just didn't know it. In my childhood, gods simply had no role. We never spoke of them, never heard about them, never discussed them. So, I also never had reason to call myself 'atheist'. Atheism only exists in a space where theism exists, just as 'people who don't collect stamps' only exists when there are stamp collectors.

It was on this forum that I really heard about gods, I started reading bible and quran, and I still haven't found one shred of evidence for any gods.

In real life I also hardly had met a Christian before. On this forum I've also learned that Christianity is the reason that Freedom of Religion in the western world is a hoax. One god is favoritized over all the others, which is truly silly for an atheist to witness.

Allowing one god on a pledge, means refusing 9,999 gods on a pledge. It also means refusing 'no god' on a pledge. Freedom of religion is impossible in a society that's like a bucket drenched in one particular god.

So, since I started calling myself atheist, I also started to respect all the minority religions much more than I did before. I realized they are basically in the same social position as I am.

I am starting to think that Pantheist is the flip side of Atheist, a classic paradox, if you will. According to many here in R&S, NOT believing in a Supreme Being makes me an Atheist. Pantheism is believing that EVERY one of us, everything in the universe, indeed, the Universe Itself, is divine. We are each a Divinity. There is no separation. So, is there a "God"? No, there is no "God". I am an Atheist; I am a Pantheist; I am the coin on which the two sides meet. I started out in R&S a simple tree-hugging Pagan, but now I am God. And so are you. And so is that guy over there. Yeah, you, the one picking his nose. I see you.

For the sake of not letting this empty. Where i am is 5:50 AM.
I recommend you repost this question later. BTW I remember seeing 5 or 6 regulars who became atheists here.

I haven't, I came to my own conclusion before I found this addictive section lol (as agnostic though), however, I have learned a lot from other members such as J.P, Bad Liberal, Laptop Jesus, Acid Zebra and a few others...very clever people that make a lot of sense. :)

I was ticked off at God when I first got here. Pentecostal fanatics disgusted me. I tried to run away from God but He would not let me go.

I've been an atheist all my life - but nothing has made me more grateful for it than coming here.

Smart move, Lokasenna.
