Where have you been doing your research? Jews were commanded to circumcize their sons on the 8th day after their birth, as a sign that the child was part of the covenant with God. Currently, every male baby in every hospital in the United States is routinely circumcized, unless the parents refuse to sign the paperwork. it's a matter of cleanliness and reduced risk of infection.

Most christians are not circumcised.

Circumcision among christians is common only in the US and to a lesser extent australia and Canada.

Paul's epistles clearly indicate that circumcision is not necessary, as Jesus represents a new covenant with God. More broadly, christians do not need to become jews before becoming christians. This was a source of some debate in the early church.

Circumcision became popular in the US and some other english speaking countries because it was believed it would discourage masturbation. In later decades, when masturbation was shown to be harmless, doctors in those countries argued it was for cleanliness.

It has nothing to do with christianity, though this is commonly suggested by parents in the US, who basically have no clue why they circumcise any more, beyond the fact 'its just what everyone does, right?"

A) Jewish males, including Jesus, are circumcised at 8 DAYS, not years, of age. The ceremony is called a "bris" and is orchestrated by the mohel, a professional circumciser.

B) Most Christians are also circumcised, though not for religious reasons. It's a matter of penile health these days. As one doctor put it, the uncircumcised male runs a greater risk of penile cancer, the treatment for which is amputation of the affected tissue. And that, as they say, is that!

The religious rite of circumcision had its origin in God's covenant with Abraham as recorded in Genesis and was commanded of the Jews. Jesus, who fulfilled the law and lived under it, was therefore circumcised. This ceremony became optional for believers in Christ because Jesus Himself is now the new covenant between God and the human race. The ceremonial and religious laws of the Old Testament era were no longer required because of this. The moral law, written on the hearts of all people, remains.
