In what may be its most audacious Olympic act yet, China's Ministry of Public Security has issued an incredible directive that lists 43 categories of unwanteds who are to be investigated and barred from the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Pariah groups include eerily vague "key individuals in ideological fields," "overseas hostile forces," "counter-revolutionary" figures, the Dalai Lama and all affiliates, members of "religious entities not sanctioned by the state" (e.g. Roman Catholics), "individuals who instigate discontentment toward the Chinese Communist Party through the Internet," and even certain types of "handicapped" persons.
Members of the Falun Gong would be barred, as would "family members of deceased persons" killed in "riots" -- a euphemism for events such as the Tiananmen Massacre -- and Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang province, which the regime brands "national separatists."

There is already talk of the U.S. boycotting the 2008 Olympics.. Based on events in Darfur..

The U.S. probably will not make an official announcement until much closer to the games...

In 1980 when the U.S. boycotted the Games in Moscow over the Soviet Unions invasion of Afgahanistan the announcement wasn't made until March 21. 1980 only 3 months prior to the opening ceremonies July 19, 1980..

The games in Bejing are not slated to start until August 8, 2008 which means no official decision/announcement will be made until early 2008 at the earliest..

Selamat pagi Walawala. Okay, it's morning in Kansas City. It is generally recognized that the 1980 Moscow Boycott was a political blunder. In the US, there was much anxiety about not sending our young people to represent us. The Russians took offense and boycotted Los Angeles in 1984. The only real result was an entire generation of athletes who missed their chance to compete with the world's elite. Human rights will come to China someday, probably not in my lifetime. We should not use the Olympics as a political tool. I would sign any petition against a Boycott of Beijing in 2008.

The world is a mess, isn't it. I guess the real question would be, "should the U.S. boycott the 2008 Olympics?".

Doesn't sound to me like they want anyone who doesn't pass their criteria....I didn't know the Olympic Committee could do that...somehow it just doesn't sound right at all to me....Maybe no one will be there.
