I have Nikon D40. feel somewhat lost or I just didn't read enough. how can i know the actuations?

Nikon keeps this a bit of a secret, but the D40 stores the current actuation in the exif information of every shot you take. You can access this information with the free IExif reader from Opanda: http://www.opanda.com Just download & install this program and open your latest picture in it.
I discovered this program when I wanted to know the actuation count for my D200.

Brian, iexif won't work for all brands & models - they don't all store the actuation count in the exif.
