what do they get out of it? personally. id feel rotten if talked to someone the way they talk to people. what do they get out of putting someone down? i dont understand what that must feel like to them to keep on doing it.? do they really think they are better than you and thats why they do it?

It's called an inferiority complex. They put down other people to make themselves feel that they're better than those people. Sad, isn't it?

Usually bullies at work are just that "Bulllies", if they are not your boss or in any supervisory capacity, then I would tell them a calm manner to back off. I have had to work with a few of these type in my career and usually when confronted they will back off when they see you are in the right and that you are not going to tolerate their rude behavior.
I don't know if they think they are better than everyone else, it is just their disposition to be like this toward everyone. People like this, you usually always have to watch your back. Sometimes, I think they are like this to cover their own inadequacies!!
