If you are about to hit a pedestrian trying to cross the road and the only way you can avoid it is swing the car sideways.
What do you look at, the pedestrian you are trying not to hit or the safe place you want to swing to?

Where I want to go (I've tried it, it was scary). The worst bit is that the pedestrian is completely unpredictable, you cannot forcast what they will do to any degree.

If you are trying to avoid a pedestrian, you already know where that person is, so you should be looking to where you want to go. Your emergency swerve may put you into danger if you have to avoid other objects to protect yourself.
In any collision where there are objects to avoid, you must try to first avoid hitting anything. If you must hit something, try to hit an object that will give on impact. If possible, hit with a glancing or sideswipe blow to reduce the impact and energy released during the impact. This will reduce the chances of injury to you, and reduce the damage to your vehicle.

Look where the car is going. In the US veering left will put you in the oncoming lanes. A head on collision of two vehicles even at low speed is always bad.
If you veer right, you may miss the pedestrian and hit a phone pole.
I would hit the brakes, try to steer around him and pray.

That's a good point. I suppose you should be really looking for a safe place to land, but most people including myself would probably have the image of a shocked pedestrian burned into the back of their head for all eternity, so it doesn't really matter where I look after that...
...unless there's a nice cherry blossom tree in bloom nearby, of course.

I assume the pedestrian has just run out in front of you....in which case believe me your only reaction will be to brake hard and hope your car has ABS so you can try and steer out of the way....If the pedestrian was already in the road and you didn't see them, then try anything as if you hit them you will end up in jail.....It all happens too quick to really think about its just instinct..........

f you look at the pedestrian, a phenomenon called "target acquisition" can take place, where your subconscious targets the person you are trying to avoid.
Besies, there may be something in the path you're taking that you want to avoid as well.
It'll help if you're looking in that direction.

Put it this way, the pedestrian is likely to die if you're doing any speed at all, whereas a car should protect you, to some extent at least.

For your own sake you need to avoid head on collisions with other cars, the combined speeds will mean serious injury, so if you need to break and swerve do not swerve to your right.
Look at where you want to go. remember most newish cars have ABS brakes which means that you can brake and swerve at the the same time.
remember, almost always, in an accident with a pedestrian, the motorist is at fault

A good way is to pay attention to the road and the pedestrian should use the green cross code unless its a young child. if its going to happen it will no matter what you do

The first thing I do is think ether I should Brake or steer.
If I decide to steer, I look around for some nice place to swing your car into.
If none of these work, Errrrrr...............
