Yes this can be true for several reasons... If your hard drive is too small to handle said amount of software, then the available memory is cut and will cause the system to struggle when that memory is needed... also it can be due to the fact that information is not always stored in one spot on your hard disk, or one straight line (however u like to think of it).... When a lot of software has been installed and uninstalled, there are often fragments of code spread out throughout the hard drive... in other words your programs' code can get split up and the cpu will have to jump around when running it to find the next line of code, which in turn slows down your computer.. this is also why it becomes important to run your disk defragmenting program once in a while.... this puts the codes back together instead of having randomly spread fragments... also i agree with the people who said having too many programs running at once will slow your comp as this drains available resources such and ram and cpu usage

Yes, some of them get loaded and clog the RAM (Random Access Memory). If the hard disk space is reduced beyond a point, that slows the PC too because it affects the virtual RAM space, needs more time to read the files (unless you regularly do file defrag). So, better to uninstall the softwares that you don't need and clean the windows registry.

Yes it is in most cases.
Many software has options like "automatically start with windows" for eg. messengers, they occupy memory which slows down the machine.
couple of ways 2 check:
Start->run type: msconfig then click "startup" tab
Right click in the taskbar, click taskmanager, click "process"
Complex softwares like oracle, java, etc. have services that always runs in the background, u cannot see 'em in task bars. They consumes huge memory for themselves.
anti virus/firewall/anti-spam softwares uses either startup and background services, so u should review with others b4 using such softwares if u 've limited ram in your machine.
Finally, every installed software keeps information in the registry. Even when u uninstall, windows sometimes keeps garbage information. A pile of such garbage slows down the pc definitely.
Only necessary softwares should be used. But if u have curious nature, I would suggest to use 3rd party softwares that removes regitry entries, shared files etc. like tuneup utilities which keeps pc clean

Yes. The more software you have running at one time, more of your memory is being used. Also having a lot of software installed and not doing normal hard disk maintenance can result in a fragmented drive, which can slow down your machine.

Yea it can, it will really slow down the pc if you have programs running on startup. What you need to do is, click on start run and type msconfig. You will see a window opening and click on the start up tab and stop some of the programs from loading up by ticking off the tick beside the program name.

Yes, large software tends to reduce the speed of your pc. They are designed to suit the present need of technology and hence takes lot of space of your hard disk and ram as well.
