Was stained glass in a medievil church just for being decoritive or for being there for a reason???

Before the printing press was invented, Bibles were copied by hand and were very rare. Some churches did not even have a Bible.

So, in addition, to being illustrations of the Bible for people who did not know how to read, stained glass windows could be made more quickly and shared more easily by more people than a Bible.

And they were beautiful.

Stained glass windows were originally put into churches to tell the stories of the Bible, like picture-books, since most of the population was illiterate and so could not read the Bible.
