Alright, check it out. November '06 i bought an '06 Chevy Aveo w/ 20,000 miles. May '06 some idiot ran a red light and i t-boned him. ie, car is totaled. Obviously now i'm lookin for another car, and no I don't want another Aveo (The guy at the towing lot told me 5 out of 10 aveos he got were cars where people died in the wreck).

This is what i'm looking at, and i've looked at alot of different opinions on each.

Obviously I want cheap, and also kinda safe. Right now my top 2 are '07 S Yaris 4dr OR any year Mazda3

Prices were closer than i thought on those 2, but each are around $15000 brand new. Any ideas of nice rides that are as good (if not better) and even cheaper than that?

On the two cars mentioned above, i can't decide between 6 more mpg or 40 more hp lol

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I own a Mazda 3, I have owned one for three years and I love it. I was given a Yaris yesterday so that they can do some warranty work and I hate how small it is. It doesn't feel as safe and frankly, it's ugly. The 3 inside and out is really sweet.

If you get a Mazda 3 2.0 Liter you're talkin' maybe 30-35 mpg's. If you get a manual, you do even better because you control how much gas you are using (it's also really nice to have control over your vehicle under inclement weather/road conditions). for the record, if you don't know stick, the dealership will help you. I learned on my 3 and I'm up to 50,000 mi and I still have my original clutch, lol.

The 2.0 gives you enough power and time between 2 and 3 rpm's to go uphill on an on-ramp to get to 65 and that won't kill the mileage. However, if you rev it up between 4 and 5, yeah, you'll be killing some mpg's, but it helps when you have to get somewhere.

I hope this helps! :)

Do you mean that it got totaled in May of 07? What you typed out says that you car got totaled in May of 06, months before you even bought the car in November 06.

I think you are making the right decision by not going for a tiny car again - they maybe better on gas, but they are death traps for sure.

I think either the yaris or the mazda3 would be nice. I'd go with the one that gives you better gas mileage since gas prices are so high. Both cars are about the same size and are bigger than the Aveo, so you'll be safter.

Not sure what to tell you what to buy -- I just want to get my hands on your time machine! When you traveled back to May 06 from Nov 06, did the miles on the Aveo spin back as well?

I would go with the Mazda 3. Since the Yaris is a first year production vehicle here in the US, it's guaranteed to have recalls and issues, just like every other first year vehicle.

ill give you a 3rd option. nissan versa. gives you both mpg AND horsepower, and a hatchback option as well in the same $ range.
