Hi there John, I think that you have basically answered your own question. It is a good start if you observe the guidelines of the hospital, get the ward nurse's advice. It would depend on the sick person's illness as to how you cope with the situation. Obviously you need to be quiet around people that are ill, but basically go with your instincts and use your common sense. Simply be yourself and chat to the patient. I think that most patients appreciate a sense of normality. The fact that you are taking the time to visit them is great. Take them a couple of appropriate gifts if you can.
