dealers say the car has a "premium" markup. How do you negotiate for a low price?

$7k for a used saturn?!?! you still paid too much. also, cash means nothing anymore. if you think it does, then you havent a clue about how dealerships make money.

this guy is talking about something unique. if you want the car, and the money isnt too much, go for it. dont negotiate yourself out of a car deal just for the sake of negotiating.

however...keep them honest. if its just a new model like a 2008 blahmobile STX, wait a few months. but if its something unique like a saleen mustang, it wont get much better...pull the trigger.

That's the classic oxymoron situation. You can't negotiate the price of a popular limited edition car. Why? Because the dealer has no incentive to negotiate with you. He has no problems selling the car at full or even a marked up price. The next guy that walks in will be willing to pay. You are wasting his time.

Pay the price or wait until it's no longer popular.

Goto another dealer and see what story they give you. Sometimes there is little you can do. For example, if you wanted a new BMW M5 right now, you would pay a premium. Why? Because the next guy in line WILL pay it, so why should they sell it to you. Simple supply and demand. You're best bet is to wait until the exclusivity wears off or the dealer has more of a supply than they can sell at a given time. Sometimes it works...soemtimes it doesn't

If you can live without it, wait a good month, and then go back, make an offer. They might be more willing to lower the price fi they see the car's sitting there for a while. That's what I try to do. It seems every month, many cars go down in price.
